Manufacturers a n d merchants must take inventory at the year-end and close their : books on the year s business to ascertain the true results of the year s work and investment So why should not a community make an annual review of its business, its activities, its investments, its progress? What better season than at the end of, the year, when the old twelve-month is past and the new one is dawning? Such is the purpose of this Annual Edition of the OREGON- STATESMAN. Salem has gone through an active year. We can think back over the 365 days, and review briefly the happenings:' A long winter with much snow, a mild summer, a dry, dry fall. Con struction activities, chiefly of public buildings, oh a great scale. New residences fewer in number than in some years, but values of the finer residences far higher, than ever. A good year for the fruit growers, for the, many canneries. Normal volume and profits for most of the manufacturing plants and for the mercantile establish ments in Salem. A year of conventions; .. a year of heavy tourist travel with guests from every part, of the nation. A year of steady improvement in paving and road building.
