Up to Friday night the week showed only seven per mits for a total of 15.575. but this brought the month's figure to $72,630. There are still some major building projects likely to be In cluded in the April permits, and unless the unusually late storms continue, the month promises to exceed the March figure which was the largest of the year so far. The general run of residence per mits will accomplish this even If the big ones which are in pros pect are not taken out this month. Last year the size of my flow ers were small. Is there any way to Increase the size of them? Ammonium of sulphate or ni trate of soda dissolved at the rate of one tablespoonful to the gal lon of water should be used liber ally on the roots of the plants a week or so before they are ready to bloom. This will increase the size of blooms. 1. How could I get some quick growing vines over my house? It is only a rented house. Annual vines should be used In your case but keep away from the cucumber and morning glory vines as they will cause a great deal of trouble at a later date. The best annual vines to grow are cypress vine, moonvine, cardinal climber, cup-and-saucer vine and hyacinth bean. A mixture of two or more different vines some times produces a very pleasing effect. Present A little additional energy this month will give you something to be proud of this summer. Porch boxes that have laid idle all winter should be cleaned for the summer flowers. If the boxes already contain bulbs, nothing can be done until they finish bloom ing. Then, the bulbs should be dug and the bulb stored in a cool dark place where they will dry out slowly. Porch' boxes that have remained empty all winter should have at least four inches of top dirt removed and replaced with new rich soil.. A fine soil for porch boxes is a mixture of half Bandy soil and half black, well rotted barnyard manure. Any plants that might have lived over the winter should be removed and reset after the new dirt is placed. When a new paint job Js needed, this should be done a few days before refilling with soil. New spring plants for the boxes may be set as soon as warm weather permits. The best porch box plants will be discussed in another article. The tops of such bulbs as daffo dils, narcissus, crocus, hyacinths, which are left in the, ground should be cut off above ' the ground, a ssoon as they begin to wilt down. To place strength in to the next year's flower, the tops must remain until they have wilted. When annual plants are to be set in the bulb bed, the plants should be placed in be tween the bulbs. This will allow the gardener to use the same piece of ground for -two crops. Of course the more crops raised, the more fertilizers are needed. A good supply of sheep guano sprinkled around each new annual plant when setting will sufficient ly fertilize it for a thrifty growth. All, fertilizers, must, be'; immediate ly BiikUsUiwith'wkter to pro-' duce the best results.' A little extra energy with the hoe this month will give gratify ing results later when hot wea ther comes. Weeds grow fastest during the warm spring months. Flower beds should be hoed at least once a month to keep the weeds under control. New Home Well Under Way Now The new Falrmount hill home being erected for Mr. and Mrs. O. F. Johnson is well under way with carpenters now at work on the second .story of the structure. It always pays in the long run to use first class mater ial in building construction. Let us go over your plans with you for we will be able to make some valuable sugges tions gleaned from 25 years spent in the building trades. F. Johnson, owner of the pro erty, who will operate a woman's ready-to-wear store there begin ning next fall. For some time Mr. Johnson was said to be de bating whether or not he .would open his business this fall but his decision is now final. TDIELY HINTS The untidy practice of throwing weeds and trash upon the lawn when weeding the beds In the spring should be discouraged. This is not only unsightly but it also ruins the grass if left too long. A small basket nearby or a canvas spread upon the ground will suf ficiently solve the problem. Dead branches of shrubbery may be pruned at any time of the year. They become unsightly and spoil the appearance of the shrub. Deciduous shrubs may be thinned at any season of the year when not practiced too heavily. Decidu ous shrubs should also be pruned Immediately after the blooming season to produce a large supply of blooms the following season. If gtvrden tools are cleaned thoroughly every time they aro put away, work will be made eas ier. They should be scraped with a wooden paddle, then wiped clean with an old rag. Never wash them as this will cause rust. Where tools are stored in a damp place, it is well to rub a little oil over the surface. If the lawn mower doesn't make a good Job, it probably needs sharpening. The novice should never attempt to sharpen his own mower but should have a reliable (awn mower expert sharped and adjust it.
