To usher in the season 'and to satisfy the desire on the part of the public to see the Spring 'Vogue in moinr cars and things which pertain to automobiles. Bonesteele Motor Company dealers for Dodge Brothers motor cars, held a spring showing of their products Thurs day, Ktiday and Saturday in their Salesrooms. The Spring showing was state wide, l-r every Dodge Brothers ilealr in the state celebrated the romling of Spring and tfte interest of the public in the new improved bodge Brothers cars with a show ing similar to that held in Salem. A fitting background in the way or at Spring setting was provided to barmonize with the wide range of Kolors in which the cars are finished. The latest Dodge cars are much improved, not. only in appearance but mechanically, and the Spring t fads forcibly to those who attend- ' ed.i . VOne of the .mechanical features wliich contributed much to the new cars, is the new five-bearing crankshaft. Dodge Brothers have developed a car to meet the neces sities of heavier closed car con struction, establishing a precedent in this regard in cars of this type. The five-bearing crankshaft ia one of those developments and con tributes materially to smoothness and silence of operation so wel come in closed car operation. j'This one feature, saya Mr. Bonesteele of Bonesteele Mote? These high ways will be enclosed just like railroad rights-of-ways are today and when railroad crossings are encountered they will go overhead: or underneath. Speed limits will be raised to permit travelling on these highways at rates ranging from 4 0 to 60 miles an hour. In some instances these express highways will permif of four, six and even eight lanes of travel and in other instances travel will be in one direction only. That means the building of a system of double highways. This is uo mere dream. Several cities and states are today con sidering the construction of just such highways. In several sections of the country 200-foot highways have been completed or are in the process? of construction. The automobile stimulated the I l.tl l. .Ill lllk lll IV ll'l M . When first assembled. the "green" Chrysler motor, as new power units are called before they have been put into operation, is filled with oil ;ni(i its tappet's and tarns sprayed with oif. The "green' engine is J hen hooked up with a motor that is running 0:1 its own power, and in trn with a shaft which drives an electric generator. The motor pulls another "green" motor for ihfs period of three, hours. This six hours of running is equivalent to is hours of opera tion without a load. The motor is then torn "down and given a complete inspection. It is again reassembled, put in perfect condition anJ taken to a "silent room." This room is carpeted w ith felt on the floor and special wall construction which ex cludes all sound. It is then set in to operation on its own .power, gasoline being used as a fuel this time. The object of this final in spection 5s to determine whether the motor can operate in perfect condition and to locate any noise in working parts. The motor re mains ia the Eilent room until it is passed on as perfect by the inspec tor in charge. ' Treasury Plans Dropping of Automobile Taxation WASHINGTON Treasury offi cials are working out a plan to abolish most of the remaining war taxes at the next session of con gress. Taxes for admission to theaters and places of amusement, excise taxes on automobiles, estate taxes and stamp taxes are slated to go, it is understood. These taxes yield an annual revenue of only about $150,000,000. AUTO AGKXCY OPEXS HKHK The Hershbenrer Motor com pany has secured the agency for the Falcon-Knight and Peerless automobiles in this community and have opened headquarters at 233 X. High street. They will handle a complete line of cars. JTeJ This picture was taken in tho mountains of Guatemala, Central America, on the road from Guate mala City to San Salvador. Strapped to' the sides' of the Dodge Brothers touring- car" are two trunks, three suitcases, and other luggage, giving the car when it has its load of five passengers, a burden of about 2.0 00 pounds. Trudging along in the opposite di rection are two Indian peons car rying all their earthly possessions to the province of El Salvador. MILLIONS OF iLES OF ROADS IK Kim Nearly 18,000 Mils of Highway Surfaced Dunna 1925 Says Report By DuBois Young It is a bit startling to learn that there are 3.001.S2 5 miles of high ways in the United States of whfch 5 60,000 miles are surfaced. Nearly 18,000 miles of roads in the several states were surfaced in 192.'. At the beginning of 19 20 the to tl surfaced mileage in the state systems had reached 145,508 miles. The total of 270,654 miles in the state system "tefnbfac.es the Im- portant roads of the country which have been laid out to serve the needs of the states. It is upon these systems that the important through routes of the Federal-aid system and the United states highways have been almost entirely laid down. Texas leads in the number of miles of state roads with a total of 16'.668 miles. New York leads in the number of miles of surfaced roads with a total of 9,625.9 with Ohio a close second with 9.501.6 miles. On these highways are 19,520, 000 motor cars, 2,810,000 trucks, and 80,000 busses. It is interesting to note that 15.332 consolidated schools are using motor transportation, and that .".14 street railways are using motor busses and that 41 steam railroad are using motor busses. .Not only does America need more highways but also wider roads capable of taking care of at least four lanes of travel. Each carries about 200 pounds and averages about two miles per hour. Comparison of the work of the peons with that of the car on the open hiphway shows that during the day the Dodge' Brothers tour ing car does the work of 200 peons. Since the car can be oper ated many more hours per day than the peon can work the com parison may be made to show even greater odds in its favor. The picture portrays transportation old and new. HUPP FIRM EXPECTS LH SPRING SALE Cole Seers Greatest Demand in Company's History During Season A demand throughout America for Hupmobile Eights and Sixe,s during the next several month, that will materially surpass all previous records Is seen by R. S.1 Cole, general sales manager of the Hupp Motor Car Corporation. In its plans to meet it, that company announces; the comple tion of re-arrangements to its plant facilities permitting an In crease of 50 per cent more cars than its previous capacity. ' far. Coleannounces that Indi cations show that Sales of cars foij March will be the largest of any single month in the company's entire history. A ''Our recent delivery of 75 eight cylinder cars to pur Chicago dis tributor fit one driveaway consti tutes what is believed to be the largest single shipment of eights ever delivered to one company," he said. "This is an indication of the increasing volume of eight cylinder business. "The automobile shows this year were by all odds the most successful for ua that we have ever known, more than twice as many Hupmobiles were actually sold during these -shows than dur ing any previous show period in, our history. Our distributors and dealers,? reflecting the general public's state of mind, are. at the highest pitch of enthusiasm over 19 27 prospects.. We are, working on plans to add steadily to our dealer organization. Because of Hupmobile's reputation we are in the position of selecting from hun dreds of able motor car merchan disers seeking our franchise. "The increased dealer organi zation will enahle us to offer greajer sales and service facilities to every owner than ever before. We plan that) Jjy the end of 1927 we shall have iai deader in practical ly every town f! more than 7500 persons in the United tates, with a continued representation in scores of towns under that size.'' " Mr. Cole points to the sale of $695,570 worth of Hupmobile Eights and Sixes by the company's New York, distributor organization in less than three minutes, and to the sale of another 3,278,6$0 by the Chicago distributor, during those automobile shows, as indica tive of the enthusiasm for Hupmo-" bile-which, he adds, has swept the entire country. "To these 14 body styles on "out eight cylinder chassis,, including three custom built bodies, by Diet rich, we also have a complete list of models for our six cylinder ar the car we believe to be this closest priced six In the entire industry,'' he said. In the production of 'the new Silent Star four, the Pacific coast Star car Ifactory is offering the only vibratlonless four cylinder" car in its price field. .With this' new mechanical achievement is also associated a sweeping! im-. provement of the myriad details of body finish. - 0 The elijninattpn of vibration which is the most outstanding and practical jof the countless refine ments in) the development of the present day low cost transporta tion unit Is accomplished purely through the use of the new ruh ber motor suspension that has been acclaimed a success Vy a number lot America's foremost automotive engineers and which has been adopted by several of the higher rieed cars. It remains for the -Star car, however, to In troduce this highly desired fea lure to the low cost transporta tion field and in so doing. Star car engineers introduce a new aspect to low cost motor car buying. In the adoption of the new rub ber motor suspension, which comes oifly as the result of care ful tests and analysis, the drivers of four cylinder cars are offered the same smoothness of operation that is to be found In six cyllider units. This is accomplished by the abolition of any metal to metal touch between the motor andj the chassis, which, of course, elimin ates vibration from the body. , To those who are Interested In four cylinder cars, the elimination of vibration has a multiple ad vantage. Not only is the driving comfort :of the car Increased but the owner of the unit Will also find that the life of his car will. be materially greater. This :mat- ter of longer life can be best un- derstood by those experience with units. ' who have liad four cylinder The elimination of vibration is not only accomplished through thp use of the new rubber suspen sion but also through- the use of the new Splcer rubber universal Joint. This joint forms a torsion insulator that takes up and ab sorbs the greater part of th strain Imposed .' on the moving parts when the clutch is sudden ly engaged. i In discussing the new Joint as well as the .' motor suspension.
