C) MO I IDEAL : CHRJSTiS GIFT Success Found in Studebak er Christmas Plan "Key-to-Happiness Can you remember way back when Christmas was an annual splurge of spending money on sil ly and useless gifts. It wasn't so long ago. In those days all gifts were di vided into two classes. The first was the gift that was extremely expensive, but of no particular use to anyone. The second was the gift that was just plain fool ish and useless. Usually in those "good old days" Christmas and all its presents were completely forgotten before the new year made its bow. In the last'twenty years, how- i ever, a great change has swept over America. Nowadays we give presents that mean something. One of the most striking exam ples of common sense giving is seen in the s access of the Keys-to-Happiness Christmas plan of The Studebaker Corporation of Ameri ca. Here isr a plan for Christmas giving that appeals to everyone from the head of the family down to the children. , "The plan is simple enough," said Albert C. Smith, local Stude baker dealer yesterday. ' "The head of the family buys a new Studebaker automobile to give to his wife, 'daughter or entire fam ily for Chrfmas. He makes all arrangements with us to have the car delivered at his - home on Christmarmornlng. "We give him a jewel case in which are the two keys to the automobile Vhe lias purchased. He hangs this little box on the. Christmas treeChrist xnas momiaiuWreclver? of ithe car finds the box and outside the house is the- new - Studebaker parked at the curb or In the drive way. "This Christmas giving plan has many Bound and practical advan tages," Mr. Smith said. "In the first place an automobile is an ideal gift, because it stretches Christmas out over the entire year. It also is a gift that the entire family and a large circle of friends enjoy and share. "There is still another angle," continued Mr. Smith. "This has been credited to a Scotchman. This particular man knew that he would have to give his family a new car last spring. So at Christ mas time, instead of waiting for spring, he presented his wife with a new Studebaker sedan and killed twp birds with one stone he pro vided his family with a new car and gave his wife a' Christmas present. "That was an unusual case, of course, but -Jhe universal , accept ance of the desire to own 'an au tomobile makes the Keys-to-Hap-plness Christmas plan a logical, and extremely practical solution to the .problem of Christmas gifts." Capitol Motors Inc. 350 North High Telephone 2125 n i r" w 7 TO C M I 3 SEEK VENTILATION Fan Industry Has Biggest Year Conditioning Air Asainst Fumes Prosperity and expansion of the automotive industry along with the increasing demand for venti lating equipment to carry off the poisonous carbon monoxide gas coming from the exhausts of au tomobiles have combined to make the present ypar the most profit able iii the history of the fan man ufacturing 'industry, according to E. B. Cresap of Chicago, secretary of the National Association of Fan Manufacturers. New tunnel building around New York, Pittsburg and other cities with growing popularity of cooling and ventilating systems in theaters, hotels. schools and homes, which is sweeping acrossJ the country into China, India. Aus tralia, South America and Africa, is piling up surpluses for the pro ducers of "manufactured weath er." Mr. Cresap said. Sales and earnings of many of the ventilat ing companies have more than doubled over last year while the outlook is for a still greater vol ume beginning in the spring months, he added. The big tire and motor car com panies have been big buyers of air conditioning equipment, Mr. Cresap said. One firm recently in stalled 300 self-cooled motor pro pelled fans in the Akron factory of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company which are capable of handling 6,000,000 cubic feet of air per minute. It is only by the use of this Very rapid air change that the tire companies are able to get the tremendous production of tires that they sometimes bit be cause a great deal of heat and fumes must be gotten rid of. Goodrich and other tire makers along with .divisions of General Motors and Willys-Overland have recently installed large systems. The Buffalo Forge Company is completing a. large heating and process drying apparatus for Fisher Body at Flint and Delco Light at Dayton. This same com pany is installing a rubber drying process for Firestone Tire and Rubber at Singapore. Glue fac tories, the Congressional Library at Washington, steam laundries. department stores. Proctor & Gamble soap factories and others were among buyers. Outstanding in the ventilation field is the installation of equip ment, in the New York and New Jersey Vehicular tunnel which .is to carry off the gas fumes of mil lions of automobiles as they pass under the river. This job was in stalled principally by the B. :F, Sturtevant Company of Boston in addition to turbines and fans for f f-y Wr New, Ypfk EdUoa. and apparatus for the New Cleveland Union Sta-: tion. the new Statler Hotel af Bos ton and the Bowdoin Square gar age in the same city. j"" "American companies are more aggressively pushing sales of ven tilating equipment abroad and this is bringing excellent results." Mr. Cresap said. "New connec tions have been established with South American companies and the outlook is very encouraging. This equipment is taking very well in Spain. Japan and in India. Complete lines are stocked in Bar Barcelona, Tokyo, Calcutta and Bombay. "It is interesting to note that our agents in those countries sell successfully, from American stan dard advertising printed in Eng lish, because they rely largely on the picture. This largely bears out the old Chinese proverb that a picture is worth one thousand words. "The Japanese representative of the Ilg Electric Ventilating Com pany of Chicago, for instance, writes that he even gets better results with the English printed matter because when presenting it that way it carries the'thought of being imported and enables him to get a better price than his com petitors on a aomestic ariicie. Such was the assertion of Vick Bros.. Oakland-Pontiac dealers in this territory, following the re ceipt of certain statistics from the factory. "As a rule." he declared", fig ures are uninteresting things but in this case there is a difference which I believe the general public is interested in. While reading them one should bear in mind that they are the result of a sur vey that includes all parts of the nation. In addition they have only been issued after several years of study. . "As a result of these percent ages it is necessary to have a greater number of cars available for delivery to retail purchasers at certain times of the year than at others. Analysis of retail de liveries for cars throughout the United States indicates a stand ard trend or normal average by months about as follows: "January 4.2 per cent: Febru ary " per cent; March l"ft.2 per cent: April 16 per cent; May 11.3 per cent; June 9..", per cent; July NEW BEAUTY ... shapwimgjhr this Answering an insistent demand for a beautifulv well appointed fotir door, five passenger body on. the smooth and nimble Essex chassis, the Scdan is now being shown .for the first time. "A Thirty Minute rNortii Cftmrriftreial J S.3 per. cent; August 8 per centi September 8.1 per cent; October 8 per cent? Novemher 5.9 per cent: December 5.5 per cent. "This would indicate that April is the best retail month while January is the worst. On the other hand February and March are the lwpt wholesale months be cause it is during this 60 day per iod that dealers are stocking up in order to be in a position to fill ordeis .s fast as they are taken. "On examining the percentages one will find that the monthly percentage of the year's deliveries to consumers is 8 per cent of the total yearly production. Of course here in California the sit uation is a bit different because motoring is ideal here the year around. "It is rather surprising to note the number of months where de liveries about even, fluctuate hut slightly, while at other periods thr-re is a sharp decrease immedi atery followed by a rise in the op posite direction."
