New $7,1500.000 Building Being -Raised at Pontiac, Michigan Work on the new $7,600,000 Pontiac Six factory now being - bail( by ;the't)alcland Motor Car company at Pontiac, Michigan, is slightly ahead of schedule,, ac cordink to a'fcnlletin just recelred her by Vkrk Brothers, Oakland- . MrVIcK" stated Xhe Information he had on hand indicated very strongly that the hnge plant "Would be available the first of next year to begin producing 1000 Pontiac cars a day. "I am told that more than one half of the entire foundation for the 30-acres of floor spaee which will comprise this mammoth -plant has already been laid." said Mr. Vick. "In addition by the end of the 'month the entire foundation will be in, for excavation has been practically completed. While 1000 men are now en gaged in the construction of this new factory the maximum that can - be profitably employed the force will be recruited up to 2000 before the end of October. At the present time every type of dirt re moving machine known in con struction is being employed. "In order to take care of the rain that will fall upon more than 1.000.000 square feet or. root, a 78-inch storm drain, large enough for .the needs of a small city, is being installed. Two car tracks have been built into the factory to help in construction, but when the 'plant is finished there will be nint miles of trackage under roof to bring in raw material and carry out the finished product. That there is need for this new factory may be gleaned from the fact that more than 18,000 Pon tiae and Oakland sixes were built during August and that during- this month the 100,000 car was turned out for ' 1 9 2 S. , "To build this number of auto mobiles has required the largest wnrblne force in Oakland' his tory. In fact, the present force is more than twice as large as ever previously employed. t'TVa tnlal at tlln nrdunt tilTIA I is more than 6500. Early in Feb- ) -ruary the force was slightly more than 2500 but practically 500 i men were pnt on each month a lace until the present' time peak 'facilities at the present factories have been reached. The biggest lamp in employment was from May to August, though since that time approximately 100 persons have been added each week." Irs W. JoTgensen, 190 S. High fit. X&tkm&l S&Xctjr Councr Here is what sometimes happens when motorists park their auto mobiles in front of a fire hydrant. Of course, experienced drivers know they should never obstruct the fire apparatus, but somf novices aren't aware of the fact that practically every city has a traffic ordi nance covering this subject. If the driver of this engine were em ployed in a big city where motor engines are used, ho might not have been so considerate of this parker. Automobiles have been smashed in some large cities when they were in front of fire hydrants that were In immediate demand. If you value your car and your purse, leave plenty of space between your machine and the fire hydrant. Otherwise, you may dream of pipes for some time to come. CURIOUS FACTS ABOUT YOUR CAR AND ITS 'GAS' By Alan P. Ingalls Recent tests in a motor car of gasoline derived from shale oil call attention to this possible source of -gasoline supplv. It H estimated by the United States geological survey that Colorado alone has enough shale, in beds three feet or more thick, yielding more than "2 5 gallons per ton, t- produce twenty billion barrels of crude oil, from which two billion barrels of gasoline may be ex tracted. F. L. Murray, a specialist in motor car lubrication, declares im provements will shortly be effect ed in lubrication mechanisms which would give a much longer life to oil in the crank case. retroleum in different parts of Wyoming. They usd it for asle grease, sometimes mixing it with flour for that purpose. Now the state produces 45,000.000 bar-cls of it annually. Texas transportation statistics show that by far more tons of peti oleum and its products aie moved annually in that state than of any other article of freight. I fact, 17 per cent of all tonnage moved in th state was oil and oil derivatives. Its tonnage is six times that of cotton or of whei. five times that of livestock and animal products. During the 65 years since the beginnings of the petroleum in dustry it is estimated that about 512.500,000,000 have been spent in developing American oil fields. In return only about $S, 000. 000, 000 has been realized from the sale of the petroleum "found." This is the calculation set forth by T. A. Boyd, of the General Mo tors Research corporation, in his new book. "Gasoline; What Every One Should Know About It." The State Historical departmert of Wyoming declares that as early as 18 49 the pioneers traveling overland to California discovered seepage and "poison springs" of business will be nnusually good in all lines of trade for the balance of this year, and particularly in the automobile industry. He said that the Star car division of the Durant Motors rl steadily increas ing month by month, and all of their operations are now showing a healthy net profit, and that the possibilities for the future are ex ceedingly bright. '"The recent price reduction of Flint cars was made possible by concentrating of all building un der one roof at the big New Jer sey plant.
