Hug, Salem school superintendent, returned yesterday from a vacation trip to Yachats. She reports that a larg er crowd was there over the fourth than had ever been there before. She returned Monday and went to Portland, returning from there yesterday. . - " Raising Figs Mrs. M. C. Halvorsen, 1434 Ferry street, brought to the Statesman office yesterday a sam ple of white figs grown on her lot there. The white fig tree from which the sample was picked is five years old and has this year borne 15 figs. She has three trees of the white variety, and one each of the purple and black varieties. The colored kinds are later in bearing. Mrs. Halvorsen says fig trees are easy to start here, and vigor ous growers, and she believes this is an industry that ought to flour ish here. There are a number of people in western Oregon who have the same opinion, and sev eral good sized groves have been started around Portland and Van couver, Wash. Billy Sunday Hear him at Chautauqua. Leavitt of Eugene, who has been holding evangelistic services at Mill City for a week. Large crowds have attended. Family Reunion Held A reunion was held by the J. F. Cooperative Plant Favored A cooperative plant for pear growers to replace the California Pear Growers association in Marin county, Cal., is being advocated by growers in that district, according to the California Fruit News. It is desired to place the fresh fruit on the eastern market under di rect control and supervision of the association.
