H. S. Gile and company has
been named defendant in a suit
brought in circuit court by the
Southern Pacific to collect $156
and interest, said to be freight due
on a shipment of glass bottles in
1923. It is alleged that only $375
of an original $531 on the freight
bill has been paid.

Raising Figs
Mrs. M. C. Halvorsen, 1434
Ferry street, brought to the
Statesman office yesterday a sam
ple of white figs grown on her
lot there. The white fig tree from
which the sample was picked is
five years old and has this year
borne 15 figs. She has three trees
of the white variety, and one each
of the purple and black varieties.
The colored kinds are later in
bearing.
Mrs. Halvorsen says fig trees
are easy to start here, and vigor
ous growers, and she believes this
is an industry that ought to flour
ish here. There are a number of
people in western Oregon who
have the same opinion, and sev
eral good sized groves have been
started around Portland and Van
couver, Wash.

Cooperative Plant Favored
A cooperative plant for pear
growers to replace the California
Pear Growers association in Marin

Postal Receipts High
Receipts of the Salem postof
fice' aggregated $103,487.77 dur
ing the first six months of this yeat
or approximately $6000 in excess
of any corresponding period in the
history of .the city. The second
largest receipts of the local post
office for any six months' period
was in the first half of the year
1925 when the returns totalled,
$96,000.

A tire was stolen, from a cat
owned by E. A. Rhoten of Salem
