WOMEN EXCLUDED IN RHINELANDER TRIAL tContmoiwl from pure l. same as it was at the Marie An toinette?" asked Davis. j "Yes." the witness responded in a low voice. The two "mystery" letters were centered about events that took place at this hotel in 1921 when Alice and Ionard registered there for a week as man and wife. The threat of their . introduction last week had brought two adjourn ments In order that Mr. Mills and associate counsel might investigate them. Their nature was admitted ly bo startling that there were re ports that the suit might be with drawn rather than have them re vealed. Settlements ranging up to 1300.000 were reported, but as quickly denied. Both letters were written from the Cliff hotel In San Francisco in 1922. Parts of them spoke of Leonard's lov-e relations with Aliee and of the time they spent at the Marie Antoinette. Young Rhine lander was 'not abashed at the lurid passages. Althongh be kept his eyes on the floor part of the time, he answered some of .the more intimate questions clearly. His stuttering became evident now and then as he sought to control his voice. Finally he said he could see nothing wrong In the thlnrs he had done. "Not even now?" asked Mr Davfs. ' "No," said the witness. After brief direct examination and re-cross examination on points. of testimony in the afternoon. I young Rhinelander was permitted to leave the stand.
