club grounds at Twenty-fifth and
Turner Road Sunday. There were
close to 100 birds in all, consisting
of turkeys,' geese and capons.
There were also about 100 shoot

Dr. O. E. Prime, president of
the club, reports that the birds
were quite equally distributed.

Every one participating in the

"Yes." the witness responded in
a low voice.
The two "mystery" letters were
centered about events that took
place at this hotel in 1921 when
Alice and Ionard registered there
for a week as man and wife. The
threat of their . introduction last
week had brought two adjourn
ments In order that Mr. Mills and
associate counsel might investigate
them. Their nature was admitted
ly bo startling that there were re
ports that the suit might be with
drawn rather than have them re
vealed. Settlements ranging up to
1300.000 were reported, but as
quickly denied.
Both letters were written from
the Cliff hotel In San Francisco
in 1922. Parts of them spoke of
Leonard's lov-e relations with Aliee
and of the time they spent at the
Marie Antoinette. Young Rhine
lander was 'not abashed at the
lurid passages. Althongh be kept
his eyes on the floor part of the
time, he answered some of .the
more intimate questions clearly.
His stuttering became evident now
and then as he sought to control
his voice. Finally he said he
could see nothing wrong In the
thlnrs he had done.
"Not even now?" asked Mr
Davfs.
' "No," said the witness.
After brief direct examination
and re-cross examination on points.

young Rhinelander was permitted
to leave the stand.

Brick is Best
nvestment !
Oscar. h. braster, secretary-treasurer of
the American Savings &. Loan Associ
ation, Tacoma, chose brick for the walls of
his home shown above.! The home is of
English Cottage design by E J. Breseman,
architect. "
Men like Mr. Brasier,-who know home
values, choose brick, not alone for its beauty
and dignity butt also because it is more
economical to build with brick. The brick
home ,saves in painting, heating and repairs.
' The brick h6me has" a greater loan and re
. sale value. The little extra money invested
in brick walls saves expense and adds large-
ly to the value of the property.

Expressing regret at certain

defeat of Corvallis. last Saturday,
three representatives of the Cor

principal, Eldon Winkley,, presi

fore the local high school student
council yesterday to apologize for
what they considered "poor los
ing sportsmanship."
Appearance of the delegation
was a total surprise to local au

game. .The Corvallis high school
representatives, however, declarei
that as hosts they felt an apology
was due in ' as much. as tney I

schools. Three caps, taken after
the game, were returned this aft

"This a'ction on the part of
these Corvallis students Is indica

C. Nelson, principal, yesterday aft

necessary, but the action shows
the finest spirit possible."

MacMillan Chooses
"A Well-Balanced
Built Around Meats"
Nothing developed on the trip to cause me to
revise my idea about foods; which is that a well
balanced diet built around meats yields the best
health results. '
On the way north we had fresh domestic meat
from the supply taken aboard when we sailed After
we reached the North we relied upon the wild life of
the region, using seal, "walrus, caribou, muskox,
Arctic hare, and many kind3 of wild ducks.
Every day we had fresh meat with plenty of fat
at at least ono meal and usually oftener when sup
plies were plentiful, and every one came through the
four months. in excellent condition; in fact, most
of tho members of tho party gained weight.
While wo often hear it claimed that eating too
much ceat is unfavorable to health, it is a fact
that such ailment 3 a3 gout, hardening of the
arteries, and other disorders attributed to an ex
cess of meat eating aro quite unknown to the Eskimos
who eat nothing but meat,
. In my own. experience I have never known anyone
to attempt to live in the Arctic on a vegetarian
diet'.. On tho other hand, every Arctic explorernow
adays relies upen the native fresh meats as a sure
preventive of scurvy, a much dreaded nutritional
disorder which was prevalent in earlier Arctic ex
perience times before we learned a lesson in diet
from tho Eskimo.
The above message frcm Donald B. MacMillan, the
famous Arctic explorer, is of vital interest to every house
wife. The MacMillan expedition carried Swift's Premium
Hams and Bacon and other Swifl branded products.
