Little at tention,- however, has been paid to the possibilities tor .bringing Into, greater prominence thefur bearing rabbit lrhich is Talnable for both fur and meat. Several attempts to' popularise the fur branch of the industry have met with fair success, but the work has been on a small scale. With the ! recent establishment of the Golden West Fur Farm at Arcadia by M. WMeek, the fur rabbit industry has been given a new; impetus. Mr. Meek is an au thority on rabbits, having written Beveral books on this industry. and has been a practical furrier for the past five years. He was formerly the field representative of the National Association of the Fur Industry. - Since coming to the coast, Mr. Meek reports, he has imported several hundred Chinchillas and rabbits "of other fur breeds! and purchased over'IOOO head of does of the various fur breeds in jthis country to stock his farm and those of his j fellow breeders. He is killing from 100 to 400 head weekly, the 1 meat being sold in Los Angeles, Pasadena and other local market points,', while 'the pelts are . being used in his fur factory, which is run in connec tion with the farm at Arcadia. Mr. Meek reports that he either owns or controls the output of about 1000 breeding does of the Chin chlllas, Havanas." Lilacs, French Silvers, Himalayan, White Flem ish and New Zealand Whites. About 300 of these are kept at the Arcadia plant. : He has installed andisoperating what is said to be the first. practi cat rabbit warren of Its kind on the coast for fur production. This warren is inclosed by a IVi inch mesh woven wire fence, six feet high, with a two foot flap of the same mesh turned in at the ground, preventing burrowing out by the rabbits. Hay, grain and water are all fed automatically. While- rabbit warrens have prob ably been maintained In "England for 200, years, Mr. Meek says he believes the southwest is an ideal location for this form of rabbit raising. Climatic conditions here; he says, insure maximum produc tion through a twelvemonth breed lng season, ' and due to the ' slight rainfall, there . is little danger from disease caused by wet and dampness. Compared with rab bit keeping In hutches, there is less cost , for labor and supervis ion, less feeding expense, and an apparently greater revenue from fur brought to a prime condition in the ootdoors, the Arcadia man says. Statistics reported by Mr. Meek othy Smith the Wesley league. Week day services: The mid-week devotional meeting and study night is on Thursday at 8 p. m. Through the rapid extermination of wild fur bearers of . various kinds, . rabbit furs are .now used to an extent that over o per cent of all fur articles 'are made from thm, according to this authority, and Mr. Meek says that as the art of the American fur dyer advanc es, they will be nsed more and rmore to imitate other furs. Mr. Meek reports that he now has plans under way to install and operate a model rabbit war ren, of twenty to forty acres, to be divided Into four sections for Whites. Lilacs.
