Barber) i t : Sooner or later in' its career every: automobile engine develo pes defects in its cylinder, which perl mit the gas to pas&througlt intq the oil case and the engine 1 be comes a gas-eater as weir as an oil waster. C. T. Ellison,' proprie tor of the Donerite Machine shop at 349 Perry street has made a special study of the causes of these defects and has prepared himself as an expert in removing the trouble. r ..if . ;jr " :i in i He says there are many "factors which may result in a misshapen cylinder and that any defect of tha sort, from any cause will per mit the gas to flow past the pis tons into the oil case. There , may be a email streak or spot In the wall of the cylinder? which is hard er than the rest of the wall and this spot will not Iwear down as rapidly as the restiof the wall. A very common, and; but little 'un derstood cause is the watping of a new cylinder block in .seasoning. It is hot generally jknown that all new cylinder blocks h must go through a process! of seasoning when firet put to ise land that in this process ' it is possible for cylinders to be . warped out of shape. But whatever the cause of the defective cylinder, Mr. Ellit 8on-says that the- remedy Is to grind it to true form; and put in new pistons to fit. HeJ says that a perfect job of grinding in a block well seasoned, coupled with new pietons made to ground cylinder S fit l ' the newly makes the . en- gine better than when new. He prepared to grind! and fit pistons to the one twenty-fifth of a thousandth of an inch, and insure there will be no binding of the, piston in the cylinder!; Such a job prevents gas passing; the pistons and adds to the power and econo my of the engine.) : j ; ,Mr. Ellison says 1 there fis a marked difference in resulta from grinding a cylinder or re-boring It. The grinding . process uses a carborundum wheel which leaves a finer finish and insures more perfect s'urface ; which permits closer adjustment of piston and cj-Tinder.
