Buy a good quality oil, as this Is very economical in the long run- Look up an oil company with a good reputation, pay a little more and buy a high-grade prod uct. "Take care of small troubles before large ones develop," is the keynote of any successful main tenance. -plan. , i.i Systematic lnsoectlon. ad justment and lubrication are to be emphatically recommenaea in tne interests of saving expensive re placements during overhaul and large repair charges. 3. Every motor truck requires an overhauling every so often, principally .., because "in Ibis way conditions will be disclosed which if taken care of immediately will result in lower future repair costs. Mbat experienced truck operators recommend an overhauling once -a year or once in twelve thousand miles. 4. The truck should be kept clean. Dirt, if allowed to accumu late, may find its way into many of the bearlrfg surfaces and in some cases may mate lubrication difficult or Impossible. The result will be Increased wear and re duced life of parts. 5. Form tne excellent habit of examining water, oil and gas sup ply before starting a day's run. Care of Tire. 1. Don't overload. Overloading stresses the tires beyond their elastic limit, destroying the life of the rubber and the durability and cushioning quality of the tires. 2. Don't overspeed. Excess Bpeed magnifies the impact of the tire on road bumps and causes overheating. 3. Don't run in car tracks, as this cuts the tires by centering the pressure at one point instead of evenly over the trend. Not only does sliding the wheels injure the tires, but it re duces the braking effect. Quicker action is secured when the wheels barely turn and the abrasion on the tires is lea&t,- 6. Most anti-kid devices are very hard on tires. Don't use them Unless it is absolutely necessary, 7. To avoid unnecessary strain on pneumatics or flat spots on solids, lift the truck weight from the tires by raising on Jacks when the truck is to be idle any consid erable length of time. With pneumatic tires it is important to know your inflation pressures. Proper inflation pres sure is as necessary as proper loads and speeds. Driving. . 1. Overloading, overspeeding and bad driving are the three principal controllable causes of truck breakdown. Check, the first two and learn to avoid the third and you will be giving your truck a square deal on, the road. 2. Use low Rear In starting and others in proper sequence. If a trailer is attached, take up the slack very slowly to prevent shock. 3. Shift gears to "lower speed when driving slowly in traffic. When traveling through sand use the highest gear possible and keep the truck rolling, but do not permit the engine to knock. 4. Do not wait until the engine knocks before 'shifting to a lower speed. When climbing a grade, shift to a lower gear as soon as the engine gives the slightest indi cation of laboring. 5. When descending steep hills use the engine as a brake. Jf the accelerator is used, set the throttle " lever to give Jat enough opening to prevent stalling motor if the foot is moved from the pedal for braking: 7. Remember - that spinning wheels do not give traction. In attempting to drive In mud or slip pery spots, wheels should revolve slowly, as this increases traction. 8. If engine becomes overheated shut it down Immediately or seri ous damage may result. Allow It to cool and add warm (not cold) vfater befart proceeding. - Never pour cold water directly into a hot motor, as this often causes- the cyl inder walls to crack or warp. 9. Stop at. the least sign of trouble, and if. possible do not proceed until an expert opinion is obtained on the seriousness of the trouble. Inasmuch as it has been known in the automotive trade for some time that Buick purposed adding a line of fours, considerable interest attaches to the specifications cov ering the new models? In mo tor construction Buick has ad hered to the Talve-in-head princi ple with which its name has ben so prominently connected for twenty years. The cylinder bore is 3 inches with stroke of 4 "4 inches. The motor develops be tween 35 and 40 brake horsepower and road tests have shown that the power plant will deliver up to 50 miles an hour with ease. Fea tures of motor construction are the large three-bearing crankshaft and 12-inch long connecting rods. extra long rods being provided to reduce vibration to a minimum. A circulation splash oiling system. which is standard equipment on all Buick cars, J the automatic carburetor heat control through which ideal vaporizing conditions are obtained. The transmission Is of the selec tlve sliding gear lye, three speeds forward and one reverse. The unl versal joint is of standard Buick construction", being "virtually an integral part of'thd transmission and automatically lubrfeuted from the transmission.' 'Th clutch is of the mujtjple disc dry plate type, built in exact accordance with the principles which have guided clutch construction In" Buick sizes. All moving driving parts are en closed. Front axle of the four cylinder car is an I-beam forging. The rear axle is three-quarter floating type, all the weight of the car be ing carried on the axle tubes and only driving torque and steadying of the wheels being taken by the axle driving shafts. The third member is of standard Buick type of construction, designed success fully to eliminate all twisting or weaving in the rear axle. Gear ratio of the rear axle on high speed is 4 2-3 to 1. . . , Wheel base of all models is 109 inclies".
