These gentlemen are all fruit growt-rs. and. in fact, no man may become a member of the asso- elation unless he is an owner anil grower of fruit. -A membership fee of $10 is made for admission to the association and tlen for each acre of bearing or chard the grower subscribes for $1 worth of stoo!:. These notes are placed in banking institutions and the association has insurances that tbey may 'be drawn against to the amount of 90 per cent of their face to pay accounts and provide money to growers. An advertising fund is also set aside for publicity work. This advertising fund Is set aside af ter the manner followed by Califor nia organizations who have found It expedient to give widest publicity to the merits of .California fruits. "In fact, this advertising has been found to have done more for Califor nia than practically all other agen cies combined since it emlnates di rectly from the producer and is looked upon by consumers abroad as absolutely reliable. The California association has proven the worth of this publicity, so that the Oregon as sociation Is believed justified in (go ing the same thing for Oregon pro ducts. "These products, whether prunes, apples, pears, cherries, peaches or berries, will be advertised under Oregon names, and even the locality given due credit for production of fruits. In this way, Oregon will be brought to the direct attention of consumers in all parts of the world. The results of this wide pnblicity campaign cannot but bring results, and the growers of the state are bound, it is universally acknowledged to create a limitless demand for Ore gon fruits, and incidentally bring to this state many people who will have a consuming desire to visit and pos sibly locate where such palatable del icacies are grown. "Another feature of this wide pub licity that is by no means secondary is the fact that all this very desira ble work will enhance fruit and farm lands In Oregon. FORMER SALEM WOMAN PASSES Mrs. Tom McArthnr Dies in San Monica R. H. Keith Brother of Deceased Word was received in Salem yes terday of the death of Mrs. Tom Ar thur, sister of II. II. Keith of this city and herse!fa former well known Sslem woman, on February 16 in San Monica, Cal. Mrs. Arthur lived in Salem for over 23 years, later going to Eu gene. She Is survived by her hus band, four sons. Karl, Frank, George and Kenneth of Eugent, her mother, Mrs. L. F. Keith, two sisters, Mrs. Molly Jackson and Mrs. G. T. C gc 2 packages Soda 15c Yeast Foam 5c Magic Yeast 5c V MORE HIGHWAYS WILL BE BUILT Commission to Open Propos- " als for 20 Bridges at Next Meeting in March WORK WILL BEGIN SOON Operations on Columbia Riv er Highway Will Be Rushed to Early Completion Iliils for the construction of 20 bridges, two of which are designat ed as overhead railroad structures on the route or the Columbia river highway in eastern Oregon, and for the improvement of approximately 38 miles of road, will be opened at the next meeting of the state high way commission to be held in Port land on March 23. The proposal of awarding a contract to construct 17 miles of what is known as the Dalles California highway will mark the first work undertaken by the state in Jefferson county. Approximately $50,000 of the sum needed to pay for the cost of this improvement has been appropriated by Jefferson coun ty, and is now available for actual construction work. Another road proposal asks for the grading of 15 miles of the Col umbia river highway in Wasco coun ty. This is known as the Seufert Deschutes river project and is to be constructed by the state and govern ment on a 50-50 basis. The advertisement of the commis sion calls for the improvement of the eight and four-tenths miles of road known as the Wallowa Canyon sec tion of the La Grande-Enterprise pro ject. The federal government has ap propriated half of the money needed for this improvement. The several bridges, for which bids will be opened follow: Wasco county Dig Eddy over crossing, metal reinforced structure with timber approach. Dillon overcrossing metal rein forced structure with concrete hand rail. Seufert viaduct metal reinforced with concrete handrail. Crook county On bridge over Bear Creek, one over Dry creek and four over Crooked river, metal rein forced structues. Malheur county One bridge over Pole creek and one over Canyon creek, metal reinforced structure. Marion and Linn counties Nine bridges over Sarvlce creek. Mr. Bishop said last night that he had subscriptions amounting to more than $1000 with promises of more money in the immediate fu-j ture. Mr. Bishop said: "If the Salem baseball fans will! dig down in their jeans and brine ! forth the necessary cash for their j ball park and tneir team. It is evi dent that they will not be asked for any more donations. As soon as the $2000 mark is reached action will be taken to clear, grade and roll the new baseball dia mond at Twelfth and Oxford streets, according to statements made by the manager of the Senators yesterday. If the rest of the fans come through as well as those' now on ' the list work on th grounds will begin this coming week. The players are highly elated over the financial assistance given by the baseball enthusiasts of Salem and the prospects for . fast team are better than ever before. Kracke, the well known catcher of the northwestern league, arrived in Salem yesterday and will serve as one of the Senators' trusty backstops. Hall, the long felow who reaches for the pill as it nears the mill race outj in the outfield also came to town yes terday. He will work in as one of the leading outfielders. There are three of the most pro minent clubs of the western coast angling for the first game with the Salem Senators. The Moosejaw and Kt-jina clubs or the Canadian league are workinc hard for the honor. The Portland Elks' nine also are in line for he opening struggle. Hearing thai the Salem Senators have an ideal location for a ball park. Billy Speas. manager of the Regina team, has communicated with Manager Bishop asking of the Sen ators would consider letting them use the new park for. their training grounds. The plans are only tenta tive but Bishop is well informed and is under the impression that they will come here to train.
