also set aside for publicity work.
This advertising fund Is set aside af
ter the manner followed by Califor
nia organizations who have found It
expedient to give widest publicity to
the merits of .California fruits.
"In fact, this advertising has been
found to have done more for Califor
nia than practically all other agen
cies combined since it emlnates di
rectly from the producer and is
looked upon by consumers abroad as
absolutely reliable. The California
association has proven the worth of
this publicity, so that the Oregon as
sociation Is believed justified in (go
ing the same thing for Oregon pro
ducts. "These products, whether prunes,
apples, pears, cherries, peaches or
berries, will be advertised under
Oregon names, and even the locality
given due credit for production of
fruits. In this way, Oregon will be
brought to the direct attention of
consumers in all parts of the world.
The results of this wide pnblicity
campaign cannot but bring results,
and the growers of the state are
bound, it is universally acknowledged
to create a limitless demand for Ore
gon fruits, and incidentally bring to
this state many people who will have
a consuming desire to visit and pos
sibly locate where such palatable del
icacies are grown.
"Another feature of this wide pub
licity that is by no means secondary
is the fact that all this very desira

by men conversant with the matter
that lands that are now considered

Iliils for the construction of 20
bridges, two of which are designat
ed as overhead railroad structures
on the route or the Columbia river
highway in eastern Oregon, and for
the improvement of approximately
38 miles of road, will be opened at
the next meeting of the state high
way commission to be held in Port
land on March 23. The proposal of
awarding a contract to construct 17
miles of what is known as the Dalles

first work undertaken by the state
in Jefferson county. Approximately
$50,000 of the sum needed to pay
for the cost of this improvement has
been appropriated by Jefferson coun
ty, and is now available for actual
construction work.
Another road proposal asks for
the grading of 15 miles of the Col
umbia river highway in Wasco coun
ty. This is known as the Seufert
Deschutes river project and is to be
constructed by the state and govern
ment on a 50-50 basis.
The advertisement of the commis
sion calls for the improvement of the
eight and four-tenths miles of road
known as the Wallowa Canyon sec
tion of the La Grande-Enterprise pro
ject. The federal government has ap
propriated half of the money needed
for this improvement.
The several bridges, for which
bids will be opened follow:

FOR BALL TEAM
Fans Donate Liberally and
Salem is Promised 9 Sec
ond to None in State
More than $1000 is the result of
the first few days' subscription cam
paign by Biddie Bishop, who is work
ing in behalf of the Salem Senators,
the baseball team recently organized
here.
Mr. Bishop said last night that he
had subscriptions amounting to
more than $1000 with promises of
more money in the immediate fu-j
ture. Mr. Bishop said:
"If the Salem baseball fans will!
dig down in their jeans and brine !
forth the necessary cash for their j
ball park and tneir team. It is evi
dent that they will not be asked for
any more donations.
As soon as the $2000 mark is
reached action will be taken to clear,
grade and roll the new baseball dia
mond at Twelfth and Oxford streets,
according to statements made by the
manager of the Senators yesterday.
If the rest of the fans come through
as well as those' now on ' the list
work on th grounds will begin this
coming week.
The players are highly elated over
the financial assistance given by the
baseball enthusiasts of Salem and
the prospects for . fast team are
better than ever before.
Kracke, the well known catcher
of the northwestern league, arrived
in Salem yesterday and will serve as
one of the Senators' trusty backstops.
Hall, the long felow who reaches for
the pill as it nears the mill race outj
in the outfield also came to town yes
terday. He will work in as one of
the leading outfielders.
There are three of the most pro
minent clubs of the western coast
angling for the first game with the
Salem Senators. The Moosejaw and
Kt-jina clubs or the Canadian league
are workinc hard for the honor. The
Portland Elks' nine also are in line
for he opening struggle.
Hearing thai the Salem Senators
have an ideal location for a ball
park. Billy Speas. manager of the
Regina team, has communicated with
Manager Bishop asking of the Sen
ators would consider letting them use
the new park for. their training
grounds. The plans are only tenta
tive but Bishop is well informed and
is under the impression that they
will come here to train.
