Just re cently a committee was appointed from' the Mothers' class of the First Methodist church to ascertain if these rumors were true and the com mittee was given power to formu late a plan whereby this condition might be remedied. The committee, consisting of Mrs. E. E. Fisher. Mrs. J. B. Littler and ?-'ytl"f eo.liult?. schools and Miss Mabel Robertson, principal' of the Highland school, learned that the recent milk survey brought out some startling facts. There are 211 pupils in the High land school. Out of this number 122 never have any milk. About 60 pu pils are in actual need. At present a large number In the primary department are given malt ed milk upon their arrival at school by their teachers, because of lack of nourishment. The committee was assured if funds could be raised a daily soup ration could be in operation in a very few days. A plan has been formu lated whereby only those In need will be given free soup. At a meeting -of the Mothers' rlar on Tuesday of this week at the hom of Mrs. W. C. Young of North Hi;.'' street, funds for the first mouth were subscribed. This work meets with the hearti est approval of Superintendent Todd and his corps of teachers in this dis trict. The teachers are to keep . a record of weights and mental devel opment of the pupils to ascertain the real benefit from this new order of things. A report will be made pub lic at the end of the three months, February, March and April. It is hoped this good enterprise will meet with the approval of many of the citizens of Salem and funds tor the entire enterprise will be free ly forthcoming. The committee wlllpladly recelv contributions as the Mothers' class has guaranteed the necessary fund. Mrs. Henry Vandervort and Mrs. W. T. Kirk have been added to the committee from the Mothers' class, and this cimmittee will undertake the: financing of the enterprise. The actual application of the wel fare work at the school will be through ' the co-operation of Miss Robertson, the principal, and her corns of teachers, with the Highland Parent-Teacher association of which E.
