The Firet Church of Christ Scientist, of Boston, delivered a tec rre at the Granu Opera house lait i i?ht on "Christian Science, the Ke lson of Ftdfillment." The lecturer was introluced by B. J. Mills of Salem, who saiu: "In fvery human heart therfj is an . luiquer.e'iable longing for health and liappi.i-s and for everlasting sal tation. "Hope springs eternal in the hutiiian breast. And thus it ev er ha been since, time began. The raait finds, a rtegr?e-of consolation in the worship or idols which he has Trrought out of material things. The untutpred savage sees God in the placid lake, in the tuibulejt moun tain Stream, the towering piles of rugged rocks or the lofty, s iow-cr.p-ped peaks. - : He hopes for an exist ence in the happy hunting grounds beyond, where sparkling rivers teem with myriads of fish, whero Indian corn grows spontaneously, and where the primeval forest contains an tbundant supply of his favorite r-rc, -It is all a desire to-know God and be the beneficiary of His - bonntif til! hand. The Hebrew nation, prior to the rhriBtian;Eral seems to have' been the chosen people of God. Their his tory itiQtsttijr. their literature beautiful, their faith, at times, and specially in many ' individual in stances was? sublime. But they did riot stand 'the test of the real Christ trim-i ple.'.f, They could not accept the teaching.? of the lowlv Nazarene. But "He went about His father's business" and taufrht as never man targht, His teachiaes found lodg rnt in the- hearts of multitudes of .His hearers. They marveled at His demonstrations over sin. sickness pnd death. Jesus pilgrimage on earth, was brief; but of sufficient duration to establish the Christ prin ciple in the hearts of a few of His devoted followers: who Jn turn taught their fellowmen and founded the Christian church. For there, centuries the chnrch re mained in its primitive purity and I H hv aanerenrs were able to demon-, strafe the Christ princinle. But be-j ginning with the fourth century it! Was rent .Wffh riUnmolnn. -J -l I - - auuaKvua auu IU1" luted : with: man-mnde creeds, doc-! innen ana; dogmas, until it lost mil semblance of Its primitive puriy tn til he Reformation it was In no' way worthy 'lof;', the ' name of Christian. Si heathen it has consisted of a large number of denominations, none of which has returned fmully to the teachings of the Christ. They have afl eliminated Divine bealiag which was taught and practised tor three hundred years. His followers were commanded to go and preach the gospel and heal the sick. I cannot see why the latter command is not as obligatory as the former. It remained for Mary Paker Eddy to go back to first . principles and rediscover the lost power of the church and . give to the world the most reasonable, the most rational and the most easily understood spir itual Interpretation of the Bible that haa been written since the Christian Era." i.. " . ' . i We have a irjin with us this even ing who is qualified to speak with authority,' of this church, its found er, and its principles. ' I have reat pleasure In presenting to you the speaker Jud;e Samuel W. Greene. C. S.; a' riember of the Board of Tectureship of The Mother Church. The First Church of Christ Scientist of Bet6a. Mass. ' Jodj3 Greene spoke as follows: t Tile history of men throughout the ajses has been an unceasing seareH after some power or gome remedy that would transform and mako- harmonious every untoward and unlovely condition of human Ex perience. History shows this search to bo one of disappointment and fail ure until the discovery of Christian Science. It has generally been along material lines. The exceptional In stances where spiritual teaching or inspiration has appeared and been followed constitute the great way marks of human progress. Christian Science accentateu this hiatoMcal fact and explains It. Today I come 1 FOR iSALE BT -Lebold & Co. L. E. Goodman R. D. Cilbert & Co. Red da way's Cash Store J. D. Cooley J. P. GIddings A.'W. ' to point you the way in Christian Science, which when rightly under stood and practiced, leads to eternal harmony; for it reveals the only true God and man as made in His image and likeness, and the whole earth to be transformed by the power of this Truth. The promise made .through Christian Science as stated by its discoverer and founder. Mm. Eddy, is "Divine Love always has met and always will meet, every human need." I Science and Health, page 494.) Christian Science is '.:ot, as some have imagined, a patent cure-art. nor is it faith cure. It is not the action of will power nor the action of the human mind. On the con trary, It teaches that the human mind must yield to the Divine Mind, to that Mind which, was also in Christ Jesus, and. in the proportion that Christian Science is understood, it makes the life, words and acts of Christ Jesus practicable for all ages and all people. Try as men will to see the bright side, they are always conscious that there are the sick, the sorrowful, the sinburdened. until sometimes one is constrained to believe that the whole earth is joining in one mourn ful lament. - Christian Science comes to such witfi a scientific explanation r the comforting words of Jesus. Come tin to me; all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I win give you rest." -Behold I give unto you, power to tread on serpents and scorpions, aad over all the power or the enemy, and nothing ahall by any means hurt you." Now just why do I say that Chris tian Science comes offering these as surances? You may say of them you have read them and known them always. Dut have they been realized in your experience? Haye you made them of any practical im port? Christian Science teaches that the kingdom of God, the kingdom of heaven, is at hand, is here and now. Through the study and prac tice jit its teaching, men and women in . large numbers are being healed of every manner of diaease and gin and their lives are being mtde brighter, happier ;and more satisfy ing. The theory that eternal life and happiness a:e to be had only beyond the grave has always been n.tfPeBSog. elee"t . In religion. Christian Science shows that It is an Incorrect theory and that men do not have to wait for death or a final Judgment day before attaining an unending j paradise, 5 ; What is gener ally designated -as" paradise .may be realized In some degree at onee, and progressively through the study and understanding of Christian Science. Jesus, by his life, taught and prov ed the possibility of solving all of Iife s problems here land now. He healed all manner 6f disease; he provided food In the desert place found tax money in the fish's mouth forgave sin; raised the dead; and finally ( after his. three days In the tomb, reappeared to his disciples' thus conquering the great destroyer. Death. ; . One of the last things he said to his disciples was, "He that believeth on me, the works that I do, shall he do also; and 'greater works than these shall he do, because I go unto my Father." With such a positive promise from Jesus, we must believe in the present possibility of healing the sick, of casting out sin. and of raising the dead, provided, of course, that we believe ia him, that is, un derstand him and hi trM.n which ia the real meaning of the Greek word translated by ou- word "believe" in the new version. Does It not seem strange that the worltf ehouldhave waited so long for on; to rise up and call attention to this and other plain Biblical promises, and prove the possibility of their ful fillment? And does it not seem ev en stranger, that when a gentle, sweet, pure-minded woman discover ed the practical nature of these promises and began to call atten tion, through healings, to them, and their fulfillment in her own experi ence, that she should have been sub jected to persecution at the hands of Jesus' professed followers? Ig noring, however, the lack of sym pathy and interest manifested by the world in her discovery during th? early years. Mrs. Eddy never waver ed in her course, but patiently and diligently studied the Bible, that she might discover the positive rule lor the solution of this problem of mind healing. The result of her study she has since given to the world, in the Christian Science Text-book Science and Health with Key to the Scrip tures. Aa the years have come and gone during these more than fifty years since her discovery, there has been an ever widening circle cover ed -by Christian Science, and an ever increasing army of adherents, men and women who are constantly bear ing witness to its healing and sav ing power; and who are ever mind ful of their debt of gratitude to Its revered discoverer and founder. There is nothing of worship or deifi cation in the reverence and respect nald by Christian Scientists, to Mrs, Eddy, but there is fervent gratitude and appreciation in an unnumbered throng of men and women the world around who have felt and are feeling the uplift and blessing of her Inspir ed teachings. Up to the time of the discovery of Christian Science by Mrs.. Eddy. he had probably never dreamed of be ing a gTeat religious teacher or lead er, and yet no other leader ever liv ed to see In his own lifetime such an extensive and substantial growth and organization result from his teaching. Such results, however, are to be expected alwavs when work is done as was Mrs. Eddy's. The pres ence of God was not a mere theorv to her, but an actual fact, which . she relied upon in establishing the Christian Science movement, aa well as in all other things. Christian Science ha3 revealed the correct concept of God. It asks the questinn squarely, . "What is God?" and gives an answer that is satisfy ing. God is Love, Spirit, Life. Truth. Soul, Mind. Principle. Perhaps the word Principle as applied to God has aroused more opposition from the critics of Christian Science than any other. They insist that to speak of God as Principle roba Him of per sonality, takes away His Fatherhood, tenderness and other human attrib utes. Christian Scientists believe that It is time the wot Id was get ting away from the idea of an an thropomorphic God. a sort of super man, 'as Mrs. Eddy says in Science and Health, page 249, "Human phil osophy has made God man-like. Christian Science makes man God like." Principle is without beginning or end, Is continuous, ia oerfeft is lm. movable, is inviolable. U ever active. In the thought or God aa. Principle. Christian Scientists have abandoaed the idea that God Interferes in human affairs, at the behest or entreaty of this or that cne, or that He Interferes with His own law, and causes the unnatural or supernatural to be happening in the affairs of men. Christian Science shows that God's creatio.i i already complete and perfect, consequently the true mission of scientific Chris tionity Is. to reveal thisTact to us, and then to show us how to over come In, our lives and experience, all those things which are unlike Gods Creation. We all suppose a man to be sick, and he desires the help of God and turns tj Christian Science' to be made well. There ia no specific or individual action re quired of God. that thU man s con dition may be righted, but the treat ment or prayer of the Christian Sci ence practitioner would be a clear realization that God has made all. and made all good. God has created! man in His own imaee jd likeness. ' therefore, the real man Wing made In God's image, cannot be what God is not, and certainly Gcd cannot be sick. God has made only good, therefore He never made any colda. fevers, aches or ills of any kind, and as God la the only power, no other power has made these ills or aches, consequently they have not been made and man cannot' have them, because they do not really exist. - To persons accustomed to use ma terial remedies. in case of illness, such a system, of course, only brief ly and Inadequately indicated here, might not be considered H.itifu or beneficial, yet the actual experience! of anyone who will test It accoding' to the principle and rule of Christian ' Science will prove that it is both' scientific and benericial. Of course, starting from the standpoint of pef-1 fection. there is ia reality no sick man, and therefore, no man In need of healing.
