It is a source of great satisfaction to : Dalies people that they may now visit ; Hood Hiver and feel that they can secuie 'desirable hotel accommodations. Here- tofore, while that pretty little town has j been a favoiito resort, the lack of a good hotel has kept many away. Now that i C. L. Gilbert has taken charge and ' thoroughly lelitted the Mt. Hood in j splendid phap--, furnishing the best of j meals, the visitors from this city will be ! numerous. j With the soldier boys parading our streets today arrayed in their natty suits, one was reminded of a sadder day two years Hgo when they inarched away to face the foe in a foreign land. Hut to day they were preparing fur all eight days' outing at Camp lifer, on the Salem fair grounds. There were forty eight men and three officers boarded a halt e church. Miss Oertrude Crow, who has been ill some months at tier homo on the ul!', is reported much worse today, and .is feared bho will haidly survive XSo late, aud they will proceed to Salem en the first train out of Portland. Charles Cathcart'is laid up at his home in the East Knd havinginet with an ac cident on Thursday, which bid fair to prove serious, but from which he is now morning at 10 o'clock Archie recovering. While driving down the dd, who was held for forgery, had his i brewery grade with a load of logs the from there and it was thought he got ofr here. Telephone messages were sent to the various hotels, who emphat ically asferled no such person was a guest of theirs, and so far as conld be discover ed there i? not a vfsiting case, no other case of the disease in the city. The re port probably accounts for an item in the Telesraui which said that the city physician there received word that four caeee would arrive in Porland, but that, he thought they had gotten oil" here. Ao a result of the article in the Ore gonian, which announced that t oO-ccnt rate would be made on the opposition line, about sixty passengers were taken on boanl the D. P. it A. N. boat yester day at Portland, having come down expecting to get the benefit of the rate and finding no Etieh rate and the boat cone. After rr.fikinir a few way landings between The Dalles and Cua cada Locks, we made fine time to Port land, arriving there at 4 p. in., giving us three hours time in Portland, which was improved to the best ability of the dif ferent passengers. Some went to the city park; some witnessed the bout racing, while others inspected the show windowp, and some took a look at Port land from the heights and the Oregonian building. Leaving Portland at (5:55, on good, comfortable coaches, we arrived in j Astoria at 10:30 p. m., where wo were ! met by the reception committee of forty I members. Headed by Mayor Bergman . and Herman Wise, we were marshal? into line and headed for the 4th of July headquarters on Commercial street. I Arriving there we were assigned to the ' rooms that had been provided for us be forehand, arid in a little while the ma- jority of our people were sleeping the j sleep of the just. j The 41 h of July committee at Astoria are to be congratulated for their enter ' prise, honesty and philunthiopy. Noth ing was too good for the boys and girls 1 with a red badge. We found no graft ! anywhere; everything was very reason able. And the Astoria people did all they agreed to. 'and a ureal ileal more). The rain early In the morning gave us a j chance to peep out from under umbrellas at the ships lying in the harbor, and especially at the cruiser Philadelphia, which, to all land lubbers, was a great ship, with her six-inch and six-ponndcr guns standing out In deadly menace to Uncle Sam'B evil doers. At 11 o'clock the parade was formed, the place of honor being accorded to the visitors from The Dalles by placing the D. C. & A. C. band at the head of the procession. The mayor and officeis of the Philadelphia and Fort Stevens came next, followed by members of the ' ij. A. It., marines Irom the cruiser, artillery from Fort Stevene, O. N. R., j floats of various kinds, Astoria mihtarv I band of eighteen pieces, social and fta ! ternal orders, etc. This, like everything 'else, was a grand euccvea. After the ' parade we adjourned to th opera house, J where we listened to more than an ordinary program. And po it went all jday. Avast series of entertainments, either on the Philadelphia or at other places, until evening when came fire : works of beautiful designs, many bal loons, etc. A fine timu was had on the way home, l'he evening on the Dalles City is one 'dial will bo remembered as a star ol social times, listening to the insp'ring Lroiigliout the day. preliminary hearing in Justice Urown- ill's court.
