CHUG ON DAILY JOURNAL, PCHTLAND, C REG ON. U3DAY, JULY 11, 1C22. I. 4 SENATE VOTES MOHEY TO GET rr gain FACTS . "WMhlnrton,' July 11. U. P. The : teniti today passed ths Polndexter bill directing; the Interior department to report not . later, than January 1. 1924, on the proposed Colombia river basin Irrigation project, authorised 4y the Waahlnston legislature. . The, bill appropriated $100,000 for a m-orera-' ment survey to determine all the facta relating: to water supply, transporta tion facilities and the probability of getting the products of the irrigation : . district to market. . Senator Poindezter said he believes reports eo far have . overestimated the cost and under-esumater tn acreage. The final area will be near 2.000,000 acres, he predicted, and the cost around $200,000,000. OFFICIAL BACKS PLAIT Arthur P. Davis, director of the reclamation service approved the bill, saying that data already obtained under the. state of Washington, needs to' be supplemented . by additional en gineering data, which he estimates will cost $200,000. Davis said that the flow of the po- lumbia is second only to the Miasisa--ippi in the United States, and it will be impossible from an engineering standpoint ever to utilize more than a minor part of its waters. COST ESTIMATE GITEK J. C Balston of Spokane, one of the I engineers who" has been engaged in the state's investigations, estimated that r- oo the basis of present costs of con struction, the outlay will be $125 an , acre. Amendments were approved provid ' ing that the Investigation ahall be i under the secretary of the interior, 1 which means by the reclamation serv v ice instead of creating an independent i commission, and that report upon the ' . feasibility and general features of the project ba made by January 1. 1924. Desultory fighting broke out in Btublin early -today, but the Free State troops were standing in rest orders. Regulars were" twice ambushed. . .A sharp engagement was fought between regulars and Republican rebels at Lough re a u. The regulars were victorious. p Fresh disorders are reported from tne Free State-Ulster frontier, vbut the reg ulars hold the dhief strategic positions and control practically all the border on its southern side. The Free State troops continue their systematic advance through the South, clearing out small guerilla bands that attempt to offer resistance. . Clonmel has been isolated and the real situation there is in doubt. c Irregulars are again active in the 1 Dundalk region, where they destroyed a number of railroad bridges Monday. A report was circulated here that Ha C. Barton and other leaders of the Re publican rebels who were captured In the battle of Dublin had escaped from Jail, but it is not confirmed.
