Europe Portland Invited To 'Break Bread' With Astorians Bringing a camp-meeting organ, to which they sang "The bells of lell go ting-a-ling-a-ling," their best oratorical talent In the persons of Chaplain W. S. Gilbert, J. M. Anderson and Dr. Arthur Van Duzen, and Centennial chocolates for everybody, 29 members of the Astoria Rotary club captured the Portland Ro tary club today, took possession of the program and gave the Portlanders such an entertainment as lay outside the bounds of previous experience. John Tait, president of the Astoria Rotarians, proclaimed the day when "As- toriaskand Portland cease living apart," and his suggestion was heartily seconded by A. J. Bale, president of the Portland club. "When I went to. Astoria 16 years ago, said Chaplain Gilbert, there was not a single highway leading into As toria. There was one planked trail that wound up in a mudhole close to town. The front of the city consisted of tide mud flats boarded over. "When we had a funeral we had to carry the corpse to the graveyard by boat. Fortunately, we have had a num ber of funerals like Portland. Our young men have grown and have taken charge of affairs. We have filled the tide flats. Good highways radiate in every direction. We have built magnifi cent modern terminals. We have built a city that is beautiful. We have thrown out 52 saloons ; Portland has thrown out 480. Astoria no longer desires or thinks she can live to herself alone. It is a happy day when Astoria . and Portland break bread together." Lss than an hour after he had been given his special star as a member of the vigilance committee, Arthur Hoff man Monday night effected two arrests and won a place In the limelight as the initial performer In Inspector Tiche- nor s citizen law enforcement band. Hoffman was truly put to test his mettle. What he had to deal with was a hand-to-hand encounter between two jealo.is women. He came through the affair with nothing more than-a bloody finger, which had been bitten by one of the women. Hoffman was walking along Broadway near Alder street, shortly after leaving the police station, where he was given his star. Every few moments a balmy wind blew his coat open and he looked with pride at his newly acquired piece of hardware, bearing the word "Vigl lante, ' pinned to his vest. Suddenly his meditation on the good things of life was Interrupted. A group of curious people, craning their necks to see over their fellows, was riveting at tention to some sort of an attraction in a shoe store doorway. biepptng up, Hoirman saw that a com bat was in progress. Two young women were engaged in a hair-pulling match he found, that would do justice to a pair of slapstick comediennes. Kdging his way in the crowd Hoff man announced : "Ahem. Ahem. 1 mn an officer." He laid a sterr: hand on one of the contestants. At this stage, he says, somebody bit his finger. He had not succeeded in restoring or der when Patrolmen Johnson and Chau vln happened along. The women were separated. After hearing the women's stories they turned to the vigilante, "Well, who are you 7" Hoffman showed his shining plate. But It must be remembered that the spe cial stars had just been issued Monday night and neither one of the patrolmen had seen such a symbol of authority They were inclined to be suspicious. "Well," finally hedged the diplomatic Chauvin. "you"re the complaining wit ness. You'll have to explain about it to the sergeant." Hoffman went along and told his story at police headquarters. The women who gave opportunity for his rapid rise to fame gave their name? as Mrs. Mar garet Murray and Mrs. Jean Dellegar. Mrs. Delegar accused her opponent of alluring Mr. Dellefear. Both wire charged with disorderly conduct. SPECIAL NOTICES 101 - AL'TOMOHILK BANKRUPT &ALB Tba mndmuvMl will aeU. at 18 ttVlark la tha fereancat. osi February Sit. 1821. at la Gfaada. The board of guardians of Poplar, one of London's suburbs, where poverty and unemploy merit "have been most severe since the war. were released from a state of siege early today after being imprisoned throughout the nigrht by a mob of east end unemployed. Men and women of the London slums shouting that they were hungry and wanted work, stormed the council chamber where the board was meeting last evening and forced the guardians to . barricade themselves within the building to save themselves from vio lence. A siege was kept up by the un employed throughout the night, until the police rescued the guardians this morn ing.
