Mont. Jan. 11 It waa offi cially confirmed this morning that Ana conda Is resuming operation In four mines Steward. Mountain View, Leon ard and Badger State ; aiao at Mountain Consolidated aa quickly aa the latter is changed over to electric haulage. Smelters at Anaconda expect first ores from Butte shortly after January II. A great many men have already been added by Anaconda and Butte at Superior mines, and streetcar service to and from the mines is doubled. Butte A Superior mills are running three shifts, tuning up. Between 150 and 400 prune growers of the Walla Walla valley resolved Thursday to form an organisation for the purpose of mar keting fruit through their ewn ' sales agency, despite the efforts of shipping concerns here to effect a compromise at the eleventh hour. This will mean that between 100 and 100 cars of prunes each year will be taken out of local commission men's hands for selling. The shippers proposed that the grow ers market their fruit through one sales sgenry. which would be representative of all the commission houses in the valley. This did' not meet with the ap proval of the growers and they ap pointed Charles Berry of Blalock. E. F. Jensen of Ferndale, Or. : J. F. Slover. O. A. Simmonds and George Price of Mil ton, Or., a committee to draw up a resolution creating and naming the new organization. A meting of the prune growers waa held here Thursday to act on the resolution. East Wind Tumbles Temperature to 29 At the annual meeting of the directors of the State bank of Portland, held last evening at the Multnomah hotel, Con rad P. Olson waa elected president of the bank to succeed LeKoy D. Walker, who will hereafter be chairman of the board. At the time of the consolidation of the Peoples bank with the State bank of Portland. Olson secured the con trolling interest in the State bank and it was understood that at the annual meeting he would be elected to head the consolidated institution. Due - to ill health during the past year it was the desire of Walker that he be relieved of the full responsibilities attached to the presidency of the bank, Conrad P. Olson Is a former justice of the state supreme court and is presi dent of the Union Savings & Loan as sociation and is also identified with a number of business and other financial institutions. While engaged in the practice of law he compiled "Olson's Oregon Laws." LeRoy D. Walker has Deen connected with the State bank ever since its or ganization. He was its first cashier and in 1919 was advanced to its presidency. Under his direction the bank has made a very substantial growth. T. E. Gruwell, who was president of the Peoples bank until its recent consoli dation with the State bank, was - re elected vice president as were Anthon Eckern and Maynard Redmond. Hugh C. Gruwell was reelected cashier and the following as assistant cashiers : H. O. Voget. Samuel Slocum. A. H. Hern dotjler and Waldemar Spllid. At the stockholders' meeting it was decided to reduce the number of di rectors from 19 to 15. Tha sharp advance in the federal iiscne system'! ratio through 71.1 to 74,7 was aae of the moat constructs re overnight developments. The increase in the New York district waa pro portionately greater than the system as a whole, advancing from 79.8 to 88.9 per cent. Then there was the announcement that 102.000 men are now employed in the big west district in motor manufacture, or rive tunes as many as during the same week of 1921. Building opera tions in 150 cities in December represented nearly $121,000,000, a gain of 112.3 per cent over operations in December, 1920. The federal reserve board pointed out that a posi tive foundation has bow been found upon which to build banking and business developments dur ing 1922. The bids, which were ad vertised tor this morning, must be In the office of the auditor by 11 o'clock. Th bond Issue Is for bonding; proper ty for Improvements made during Octo ber, 1121. The bonds are Issued in con venient denominations, not exceeding ; I10OO. and will bear per cent interest. . The bonds are dated November 1. 1921, and will mature ten years from that .date. Bids for the bonds must be for - at least par and accrued Interest. The city recently sold Improvement bonds amounting to $817,000 and for them obtained a premium of 13.60 on 1100. Merge Offices to Lower Salary List Boise, Idaho, Jan. 13. Consolidation of the offices of secretary of the Boise Chamber of Commerce and secretary of the trafic bureau was decided upon at the meeting of the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce Wednesday. W. H. P. Hill will retire from the sec retaryship of the club and George ' D. Graff, at present in the traffic bureau, will take charge of the combined offices. The change, which is prompted by econ omy, will take place March 1. Invitation for Seattle Aid Is Withdrawn Spokane, Wash.. Jan. .13. Spokane Thursday withdrew its yivitation to Se attle to contribute $3000 to the $10,000 fund necessary to bring General George W. Goethals, builder of the Panama canal, to make an engineering survey of the Columbia basin project, as the result of indifferent and "discourteous" consideration given to the Spokane dele gation of business men by the state de velopment bureau of the Seattle Cham ber of Commerce. At the Cham ber of Commerce luncheon Wednesday the irrigation committee was instructed to use its . influence and that of the Chamber of Commerce to induce the state reclamation service to continue drilling an artesian well started at Ringold several years ago by R. V. Stubblefield, and on which he expended about 88000. The well is now down about 800 feet and the water is about 12 feet from the top.
