PACIFIC .RAUJiOAD SHAKES ; ARE IN MUCH INCREASED DEMAND PRICE OF LUMBER SHOVS .REDUCTION Kansas City, Mo., Aug. 9, Prices have " been . reduced by - dealers'- on finished lumber, hardwood, shingles, lath and window frames.. The common grades of lumber remain stationary in price in this market. - FRUIT -- Ban Francisco. Aue. 9. Owing ' to frosts the melon crop has not been as large as expected and the demand is strong with prices good. Peach canners are buying In a limited way, but ship ping demand is heavy. Prices hold firm at from 3a to $50 a ton. COAL Philadelphia, Aug. 9. The Lehigh Navigation company announces that all mining operations are shut down as a result of a "miners' vacation" in which 8000 miners left work. The loss in wages is estimated at $50,000 a day. The com ; pany declares the men refused to sub : mit the question at Issue, regarding payment for coal to two men. to the conciliation board. MEN'S CLOTHING Xew York, Aug. 9. The Increased use of tweeds and other rough fabrics in men's clothing- is tending to reduce the cost of production. This reduction not ' .only is noted in cost of material, but the rough fabrics don't necessitate the same careful tailoring that the smooth fabrics require. WOOLENS Boston, Aug. 9. While wool dealers .are much encouraged over; the result of : the spring sales of the American Woolen ; company and over the fact that liquida ' , tion of piece goods now is practically over, they view with some alarm the importation of English :yarns at prices radically lower than those current here. The English, they assert, are not mak ing a profit on these sales but are mak ing them because they need ready cash. DRY GOODS New York, Aug. 9. More buyers for department stores throughout the coun try arrived here so far this week than at any similar period this year. On one day over 600 registered. Chicago, Aug9. July sales of Mont gomery Ward & Co. show a decrease of 41.13 per cent from July, 1920. Total sales for the seven months this year were $41,499,535 as against $66,642,316 for the same period of 1920. COTTONS. New York, Aug. 9. Cotton manufac- , turers here are -watching closely the price trend of thei British textile trades for possible effect here, especially in view of the reduction just announced of from 15 to 20 per cent on cotton cloths by Horrockses, Crewdson & Co. of London. This cut was partly due, it ,wao said, to further reduction in wages. LIVESTOCK Chicago, Aug. J. The jwork of fi nancing livestock growers over this sea son by means of the $50,000,000 livestock pool has progressed sufficiently to pro duce widespread beneficial results. More than $5,000,000 in loans have been placed over the Central and Western sections. I POTATOES Kansas City, Mo, Aug. 9. Potato growers of the Kaw valley, who last , year received $6 a bushel for their crop, now find their : produce a drug on the market. Iron ore shipments from the mines of the Lake Superior region for the first seven months of this year totaled 10,418,915 tons as against 26,079.111 tons for fthe corresponding period of 1920. The market for upper leathers, which has been active. is now experiencing a period of extreme dullness, although prices are practically unchanged. - The market for calfskins shows continued, strength. ' RUBBER . . Akron, Ohio, Aug. 9. The B. F. Good rich company, manufacturers of - tires, reports a steady improvement, in its af fairs. Orders for dia monds from retailers In some sections of the country, now are approaching nor mal. Diamond merchants look for a rise in the price of the stones, due to the increase in demand for cut stones and the scarcity of rough stones production being restricted by the policy of the dia mond syndicate, i ! - PAINTS Cleveland, Aug. 9. Paint companies here look for a decided increase in busi ness this fall. : The Glidden company has put all its salesmen back on the road and will operate at 75 per cent of ca pacity in all plants during August and September. There were slight rallies In the last hour fol lowing the sharp declines that occurred in the early- part of the afternoon, but business . continued small and the mar ket was generally of a sluggish charac ter as It has been -during the preceding part or the day. - U. S. Steel made a slight rally from its low level and Baldwin fell to 74. Sim ilar upturns were noted in a number of other issues and only a few stocks showed any . material change at the close as result, of the day's trading. . N. 5.X The stock market was irregular at the early trading, today and business was on a small scale. United States Steel was un changed at 74. Famous Players ad vanced to 51. Studebaker rose to 78. Sinclair Oil unchanged at 19. Mexican Petroleum rose. to 105. United Fruit rose 4 to 105. General Asphalt advanced to Sl. Baldwin declined to 76. American Smelting was unchanged at 35 and Great North ern preferred advanced to 74. Trading was on a small scale and little importance could .be attached to move ments of prices which, were narrow in range and showed irregular changes. A feature of the market in the first hour of trading was the development of strength in the railroad list. Northern Pacific was the most active feature, advancing 1 to 77, and was followed by Great Northern preferred, which rose 1 point to 75. Reading also was prominent, advancing over 1 poin to 70. and Southern Pacific also made a gain of 1 point, moving up to 78. - Steel industrials also became strong after the first few minutes, with vigor-j ous buying putting U. S. steel up from 74 to 74. Petroleum stocks also showed strength after initial dealings ; Mexican Petroleum, after yielding to 104, rallied to 105.
