PCJCXT. By Hynaa B. Cohen ; Next week unless the weather1 man plays . havoc : with climatic ; conditions there will be quite liberal stocks of home grown berries on the market. In the meantime there is an acute short are of offerings and the price has gen erally been advanced for the California stock. On Yamhill street where they have been selling strawberries at 20c a box or two boxes for 35c. the present price for best berries Is 25c a box, al though a few are still offering; two boxes for 45c ; Strawberries from Kennewick are now arriving-, but these are very high priced and the same la true of Columbia river and Willamette valley stock. With a few days of sunshine there will be' lib eral ripenlnr. of this fruit with conse quent lowering of values. Retail butchers continue to ask war values or within "a fraction of them, while 'wholesale prices in practically all lines are. again showing reductions. Prof iteering in veal is shown in many in stances and while some mutton is being sold rather low, the better cuts continue high. . - i There is considerable talk among con sumers of organizing for the purpose of opening cooperative markets in an ef fort to force retailers to put values on the basis of present wholesale figures. It is argued that consumers would be able to purchase their stock much more cheaply and the outlay would not be considerable In starting such an estab lishment., y - J The following pricea rule generally in retail shops for good quality. To some extent the recent im-Wity of local wheat price, aside from tne Eurc:iean situation, has been due to the fear of a flood here. WHEAT OPTION MARKETS I NOW RESTRICTED The meat situation has become very serious. There has of lata been utter stagnation in the livestock market. Kill ers claim that the low prices offered for livestock are the result of the lowness of wholesale values. They claim that it is the lack of demand that is causing so much trouble In the trade at this time. ' 7 The same trouble t shown in the market for country killed meats. Retailers are purchasing their requirements st the lowest prices for many year and are making not the slightest effort to past this on to the consumer. On the other hand, the consumer is today purchasing perhana one half the normal supply of meats. This mean that the retailer has a greater overhead expensevper pound than when the volume of business was larger. . Some retailers acknowledge that they have been charging too much for meats, but claim they ewne the stock and can charge whatever rhey please. In th meantime the public Is likewise buying what it please- and this i of very small volume. Th producer ie hit hardest of 11 because be is unable to cell except at ruinous value. o Wheat Booms at Start Of Saturday Trade . a ' . Chicago. May 21. -(I. N. S I tart of rain over th Southwest and a bullish report from Kansas encouraged buying of wheat today and 2iening prices were e W 114 e higher for ay and Vic lower to 4e higher for July. Fifteen days out of Honolulu, the sailing vessel Irene is on her way to " Montesano to load 1,000,000 feet of lumber for San Pedro. If she comes up the Chehalis river without accident, as is confidently expected by mill men here, she will be the first vessel to call at Montesano since 1906. ; High freight rates on the railroads has caused i mill men here to undertake the revival of shipping. Years ago Monte sano was a regular port of call for many of the lighter draft boats. The river has developed two bars between here and the harbor, but recent sound ings show more than 17 feet of water at high tide. An effort will be made by business men here to have the port com mission dredge remove these bars. Local mills have been sending lumber to the harbor by barge and loading there since (he raise in freight rates. The South Side Lumber company has recently con structed a dock in anticipation of the coming of the Irene and other cargo car rlers. I - New Australian Service San i Francisco, May 2L (U.
