Cohen Consuroers should purchase their veal In the retail' markets at least 6c a pound cheaper than last week because whole salers are' buying their requirements for at least that much leas. There has never before been such a liberal stock of veal on the market as recently iand wholesale prices have dropped unusually fast. lie toners are advised that they could create a much more liberal demand if .they would give the publics the benefit of this drop and t)elr profits would still be very liberal because of the increased sales. Pork prices are likewise much lower than a week or 10 days ago and the public ia entitled to secure its require ments at tower prices than last weeK. -Potato market ia firming up somewhat and consumers who delay tfceir winter purchases are likely to pay for the delay. Wheat displayed flashes of strength during the session on covering by Eastern shorts and 'purchases by seaboard houses against eiport sales yesterday said to have amounted to 1,000,000 bushels. But the weakness in coarse grains had its effect in ; wheat and induced general liquidation. Local and Southwestern wheat markets were heavy and closed sharply lower. Corn and oats registered new lows again today; Provisions were under pressure from commission houses and dropped sharply. Trade was again restricted owing to the crippled wire service to, the east. Prices in all grains reacted some at the close due to profit-taking. Closing prices for December wheat were 34c lower. March lost 33VzC December i corn dropped 22c ; May lost 11c, and July lc lower. Provisions started generally . lower on scat tered selling. a Chicago range, by United Press: WttiSAT Portland grain trade is being censured because of the false quotations that it is dally giving the country. The pricea bid on the exchange are sd ifar out of line with actual bids at country points that at the moment they are useless. The fact that no business is shown in wheat en the Portland exchange is one that gives bid ders a chance to manipulate) quotations here al though in the country where there ia competition they must bid the proper price or ; they do not get "the grain. Fact of the matter is that present taeuca are such that the reputation of this market is being hurt. Everyone in the grain trade knows that the Quotations are not accurate and ! while some efforts -have beet, made to correct the evil the majority; of the trade appears adverse to making the proper change. The San Francisco market for :tops today was 55c to 67c, and this would mean at least 45c to the local growers. Many oi tne growers made it nlain today that if the price was not over 45c there would not be many birds placed on sale.; It is understood among the growers that unless the price is satisfactory ' a big .per centage of the birds will be held over for the Christmas trade.
