Philip Wlnifree. husband of the woman who stole from the Aurora State bank to win backf his love, waa sued for divorce here Wednesday and later arrested on a charge of assault and battery preferred by hla wife, lie was released on bonds. Mrs. Effle Wlnifree. the wife, charge cruelty. Baying that since their remar riage in April, following the expose of the bank robbery, , he has continually cursed and beaten her. i - She asks custody of their two chil dren and $20 a month for their support. She first married Wlnifree, she alleges. In Texas when she was 13 years old. NEIGHBORS SCANDALIZED BY TROUBLES IN FAMILY Sandy. July 22. Mrs. Effle Wlnifree. who stole $6500 from the Aurora State bank last March; to re win her divorced husband's love, and who was forgiven by the bank officials, fled Tuesday with 'her two children, aged 7 and 9, from the home at Sandy, where she has been liv ing with her husbaqd since their remar riage in a Portland courtroom. Neighbors Ttor blocks around say they have been scandalized by recent happen ings at the Wlnifree .heme. Winifree, they tell, has shoutedlle names at his wife at all hours of the night, and in broad dayltght he has dragged her Into the yard by her hair, while she screamed and fought. Both have been at fault, they say. f: - ' Wlnifree works at a lumber mill near Sandy. Mrs. Wlnifree had been employed temporarily at the Aurora State bank. The piles of crinkly bills and yellow gold tempted her dally. She wanted to get her chil dren, who had been given into their father's custody by the divorce "court's order, ; Finally she took -. $6500 and came to Portland. She showed the money to Ihe Goodrich adjustment 'Basis : Silver own her divorced husband. They decided to buy a little farm near Bull Bun. They made a payment of $1500, and most of the remainder of the money was buried in the gr round near their house. ' ' . But Mr a. Wlnifree was suspected and Burns operatives finally took her Into custody. She confessed and the money was recovered. Because of her mother love and desire to return to her husband, the bank directors decided not to prose cute. : . ji .. A few weeks later the-Winlfrees, ap peared in court saying they had made up their differences. The Judge remarried them, and they came to, Sandy to live. Neighbors were : kind to them because of their unfortunate life, story. Three Injured When 2 Autos , Collide on Interstate Bridge Three persons were " injured,, two of them perhaps seriously, when an auto mobile driven by H. C Hartwlg of Beaver ton collided on the Interstate bridge at 12 :45 'Thursday morning with a car in charge of Max H. Hofer. .914 Washington street, Vancouver, . Wash Miss Louise . Hartwlg, - 805 HaTsey street, was thrown , from her brother's car to : the pavement and into the bridge railing. She probably suffered Internal injuries - in addition to severe cuts ; and : bruises, physicians report. Mrs. H. C. Hartwig of Beaverton may have suffered Internally, and H. G. V Southern Pacific Is Absolved of Blame For Death of Four Albany, July 22. A coroner's jury re turned a verdict absolving the Southern Pacific railway and employes of blame for Monday's tragedy at Alford crossing, when Mr. and Mrs. Joseph P. Schrlmsher of San Francisco, Mrs. Schrlmsher's daughter, Mrs. R. V, Joste of Oakland, and the latter's ii-yejir-old son, Bobble, met death. July 22. Announcement was made here Wednesday r that Hugh J. Armstrong and Paul Arm strong of -"Chicago have purchased from the Youngsbay. Land & Im provement company a tract of 5200 feet of water frontage on the west sicfe of Youngs bay, the considera tion being $75,000. : i I; J r Last. As a result of the two purchases the Armstrong brothers own a; tract with a frontage of 200 feet. 800 feet in depth, comprising approximately ; 280 acres on the west shore of Youngs bay. . W. H. Bilyeu, 80, of Kalama, Victim of Yellow Jaundice Kalama. Wash., July 22. W. H. Bil yeu died Wednesday from yellow Jaun dice. He was 80 years old. The body will be taken to Sclo. Or., where the funeral will be held Saturday. He Is survived by one daughter, Mrs. G. M Coffey of Kalama, and six sons, Lloyds and Court Bilyeu of Kalama, Homer Bil yeu of Seattle, and Ira, Walter and Al bert Bilyeu of Sclo. City Marshal E. -D.
