Til Kennedy, director of opera tion for the Emergency Fleet cor poration, has resigned. August 1 Kennedy will take charge of 'the local office of Norton. 'Lilly '& Co., agents for the Isthmian line at Port-, land, relieving R. Of. Sullivan, who has been ordered to Los Angeles in the service of Norton, Lilly & Co. Kennedy formerly agent at Port land for the American-Hawaiian com pany and - after the government had taken overthe vessel of that company for transport service "under the emer gency act. Kennedy went with he Fleet corporation and has been director of operations since the early part' of 1918. For the past 30 years Kennedy haa been a figure In steamship operation on the Pacific coast. In the transporta tion business he is dean In the freight game. He took charge of the American Hawaiian company at Portland in 1907 and continued as head of the , local branch until the fall of 1917. : Norton, JLHly A Go., whom Kennedy will represent, are among the largest operators of steam vessels on the coast and deal in conjunction with E. Sternberg Will Be (Married to Olympia Woman The marriage of Miss Josephine Oppen heimer of Olympta, Wash., and Dr. J. D. Sternberg of this city, will be quietly solemnized Wednesday evening at the Benson hotel. The service will be read in the presence of a few close friends and relatives of the bridal couple. Follow ing the ceremony Dr. Sternberg and hla bride will leave for the Bast, Stopping at Lake Louise and Banff.; They will also visit in Rochester, Minn., and will spend a short time in Jfiew York, and Washington, p.- C. - Since, the announce ment p "their engagement in Portland Dr. Sternberg and his fiancee have been much feted. They will return in a few weeks to Portland to make their home. MS NAMED TO HEAD VETERANS . Marshfleld, July 7.- United Span ish American War Veterans of Ore gon, at the business session of the an- ntal encampment Tuesday,; elected the following officers: i Department commander, Clarence R. Hotchklsa, Portland; ' Benlor vice commander. Dr. L. W. Hyde, Hlllsboro; Junior vice commander, E. B. Hawkes, Al bany. -Other officers are appointed by the commander. i The following were elected delegates to the national encampment at St Louis in September, and pledged themselves to attend Colonel John L. May of Portland. L. H." Shirley of Hillsboro, L. K. Hurst of Albany and C. J. Smith of Ham mond. Astoria was chosen as the place for holding the next encampment. A. T. iWoolpert of . Salem, department Commander, presided over the sessions. In his annual report he urged the pas sage by congress of the Sella bill, which grants liberal pension privileges to th Spanish American War veterans. Ad jutant Carl Abrams of Salem reported that there were 789 members of the order in good standing in Oregon. - Congressman C. K. McArthur, Colonel John L. May and - James Walsh ; of Portland. Robert Kumrow of Salem and Rev. J. T. Anderson of Marshfleld made patriotic addresses. Dr. L. W. Hyde of Hillsboro, who is the Burgeon general of the national organization, told of a campaign which is being conducted to rearister an the erravea of Spanish War veterans and provisions being made to mark graves which are now unmarkea. J. K. Withers poon of Seattle, senior vice commander In chief of the nations! organization, urged that a membership campaign be started in the state and asked that Oregon send a full delegation to the national encampment at St Louis. Wednesday the resolutions committee will report and officers will be installed. About 60 accredited delegates are In attendancef and, - with their families. make about 100 from. out of town. There Is much feeling regarding the railroad rates. The delegstes say they were crranted a fare and a third, and now full fare is demanded' on the ground that there should have been 250 visitors to warrant the reduced fare- : s r MILITARY ORDER OP SERPENT ; INITIATES 50 CANDIDATES Marshfield. ; July 7. Meeting of i the Military Order of the Serpent, a national organization which accepts only Span' ish war veterans, was held at Marsh field Mpnday evening. ' About 50 candi dates were initiated. In a street parade preceding the Initiation a feature was a large serpent whose tail was ' colled about the candidates. 1 The team' was dressed to represent the different tribes in the Philippine islands. The following- state officers were elected ; Clar ence R. Hotchkiss, grand generalissimo; James C. Walsh, grand' recording scribe, and George F, A.
