All the delegates- were present at the
meeting -with the exception of McCamant,
Carey and' Cooper, and all sledged them-
selves and th. delegation, to vote . for
Johnson during .alt of the - ballots cast
th nexCday.. Theywere to have a sec
ond meeting" Friday, night and then de
termine whether to still remain In the
Johnson column., or ; whether to go to
some other candidate. - r.
: On the first' ballot of Friday all of the
Oregon delegation, with the exception of
McCamant, kepi rbetr ' pledges - to . the
people, and to each other. . On the sec
ond ballot r. J. Cooper reoudlated both
bis pledge and his. promise to the dele
gation and voted for Wood. He did this
slio In the face of a telegram sent from
The Dalles, on May 25. in which he
said". "I am oledeed to support Ore
gon's choice, and if Johnson . has carried
tiie state he will receive my loyal sup
port. To do otherwise would be treach
. ery to Oregon Republicans, and any man
elected as a delegate who falls to obey
the mandate of Oregon Republicans will.
In my opinion, be untrue to the people."

On the third ; ballot, Judge Carey,
Brooke and Dow Walker- deserted k their
delegation, the promise made with It and
their campaign pledge and left the John
son column, despite the fact that he was
, then on a rising and not a falling tide
- That night the delegation bad its
scheduled meeting, and a row -not on
the' schedule. .Delegates Rand, - Olson,
Tooae, Adams and Johnstone decided to
tick to Johnson as long as he ; was
supported by his California delegation.

' The five bolters besought them -to de
sert Johnson, but they refused, .not only
tecause of their pledges but ; because
tey desired to keep their record clear
as to who it was on the delegation who
repudiated their promises -made to the
voters of the state. As a result. Rand,
Olson, Toose. Adams and Johnstone, the
last of whom alone was a Johnson man
by personal choice, went down to - the
last ditch, casting their five votes with
the California delegation for Johnson..

going to San Francisco to take charge
of special u "fire weather" investigation
