Mother Seeks Boy Who Left Farm to See World Beyond The wanderlust has claimed Edward Matthes Jr., aged 16. from the farm home near Salem, whose shadow he had never before escaped, and since April 4, every effort to find the lad has been futile. The lad's father had discovered that the boy was picked up by a man named DeWitt and was brought to Portland on Sunday. April 4. He intended to seek work at the Oregon City paper mills, he said, but instead went to the DeWitt farm at Milorn, near Junction City, after visiting Portland, and when he could not do the work required of him there, he disappeared without leaving any hint of his destination. Edward is without money and has had no training for work of any kind, and has never before been more than a few miles from home. Word from the lad would be appreciated by his aunt. Miss Ella McMunn, Salem. R. F. D. 8. When Edward left home he wore a gray cap, blue overalls ana macmnaw coat. He weighed loO pounds and as L Mil Vila airo rolatlvps Nflv Hfl tilts i tall for his aire, relatives say. He has large, clear blue eyes, and hair that is becoming dark. The sudden crass of Paris socity for spider web silk has caused the revival of an Industry that flourished in the days of Catherine de Medici. Three spider farms have been established by enterprising women here, who are making fortunes and are un able to satisfy the demand for this deli cate silk. "Beta" spiders, which produce the coveted material, are of a large speci men, not unlike the tarantula, though they have smaller hairy legs and small protruding red eyes. The web the spider weaves is of extraordinary texture, muh thicker and stronger than that of ordi nary spiders. The "Beta" spiders spin as much as 15 to 20 feet a day. A special diet of flies Is served them on the spider farms, the ration being one ly ptr spider daily. The process of transforming the webs into silk, which was commonly done at the courts of the kings of France, is comparatively simple. After a good sized web is spun. It is carefully re moved and bathetr- in certain chemicals, whereafter it Is rsspur.. Hair nets, blouses and even lingerie and stockings of wonderfully fine texture are then produced.
