' f ' ; 14 THE OREGON DAILY JOURNAL PORTLANP, FRIDAY, MARCH ' 12, 1920." f ' Today's Market Basket ' By Hrasea B. Cokes ' OftIrae the remark has been made tff ttioss la closest touch with the markets that ; the average consumer la always wishln" tor low price on foodstuffs, but seldom buy whan values art down. Such remark are again made as & re sult this week of the complete demoral ization of tha err market. Whan eg- prices war abnormally high, everyone wanted ears, and many boua-ht them. Now with eggs plentiful and compara tively low when other foodstuffs are considered, the appetite of the public baa gone astray. ' Just why the public will purchase ens when they are to cents to 91 a dozen .and turn up their nose at supplies when they are being freely offered at 48 cents a, dozen, and some lower than that. Is one of those vexing mysteries that will likely remain unsolved. Eggu are a mere example of the ebang in appetite of the public," for the same thtnr can be said of other lines. For Instance the public's appetite for pota toes is greatly quickened whenever the price Is advanced, and wonderful to say, nana want potatoes when they are cheap. VEGETABLE DEKAITO E50BM0TJ8 Demand for esetables has never be fore been so great aa at this time. High prices are ruling- and everyone wants vegetables. Practically anything- in that line is quickly snapped up and consum ers are tmable to get their fUL Radishes, turnips, parsnips, carrota, beets, celery, cauliflower, sprouts and other stock are In heavy supply but the demand la even greater. Mexican tomatoes hay recently shown a fair Improvement In Quality and the demand la growing ' Spinach from Walla Walla, from local places and from California, is offering with most sales being made at 2 pounds for 2S cents. The local and California stock is the best. California cabbag offering are ex tremely heavy and the market is over stocked. Consequently prices are lower. It beg-lns to look like lower butter prices for the consumer. Because of the very slack' demand for canned milk, the condensarles have closed many of their plants and auppiiee of milk are being, tumd over to butter makers. This, with 'tfce reguiar seasonable In crease in the ; output of butter, should quickly cause a reneral lowering -J fit value .to the consumer. o .. : -Government! cold storage beef Is" being- offered to consumers at several west side markets : and many are availing themselves of the lower prices,' although the general publio continues to seek the better quality and cuts at the higher prices. While veal prices are lower in the wholesale trade, consumers are not like ly to receive much, benefit because the price of hides is sharply lower. Coun try killed calves comes to market with the hides attached, therefore higher priced hides means a lowering of the cost of the meat. With hides lower, it would take a very severe break In- the wholesale price to affect the retail value. APPLES BEATIITG OKAKGES Consumers have made their choice in the matter of fruits by purchasing ap ples instead of oranges. There is a greater demand for apples today than when prices were lowec, but the public appetite tor oranges have been quieted to some extent by the Inferior quality of torn of the fruit. Some; of the late varieties of apples are now at their best. Buying them by the box will save money for the consumer. There Is little dif ference In the quality at this time and the wide range In prices la due to the difference in the appearance of the fruit.
