Crop Rotationand Soil Improvement the Surest Means of Securing Prosperity CROP ROTATION IS 1 10 HOLD FERTILITY OF SOIL Legumes Supply Necessary Ele- ment If Land Is Cultivated With Use of Fertilizers. By Itoy C. Stt-wart ."You cannot coaat down hill al ways, you must sometime climb." Neither can you continue to grow lartfe cropH without feeding the land. Fertilizers are made neceaaary mainly through cropping the soil to death with out using any system of crop rotation. There are cases on record where fields have grown the same crop for years, each crop getting poorer until legumin ous .crops were introduced and grown ESSENTIA , ' for a lew years and then used in rota tion, with the serial crop when the land began to build up instead of down. Qrop rotation is the first essential in me Duuaing up or soils. This is ac complished through drawing upon dif ferent elements each year which gives the other elements a chance to build up and be ready for the next crop for which .hey are suited. In many sections there Is not suf ficient barnyard manure to turn back to the soil and therefore a green manure crop, preferably a leguminous crop, must be used. According to Cyril Q. Hopkins, professor of agronomy in the University of Illinois and one of the best soil authorities In the United States, "organic matter consists of compounds formed by life processes, compounds that are or have been living matter." RATE ORGANIC MATTER 8CPVLT Keeping your soils well supplied with organic matter Is very Important owing to the fact that practically all of the nitrogen In the soli Is held by this ma terial. In addition to this, a soil con taining plenty of organic matter holds mo water, does not run together and bake and makes the plant food elements more available. Leguminous crops are valuable In crop rotation because of the small no dules which form upon the roots and collect nitrogen from the air through the tops of the plant. Since nitrogen is an essential food for all serial crops the use of legumes supply exactly the ele : ' merits that-could be supplied In no other way without using fertilisers. From 60 to 100 pounds of nitrogen per acre will be deposited on the roots If the seed Is Inoculated with the nodule forming bacteria. Inoculation la not accessary If the ground contains the bacteria. Since the tops of legumes con tain twice as much nitrogen as the roots Ifi a leguminous crop Is turned under as green manure, potassium, pnospnorus amd a large amount of nitrogen Is given to the soil. With these three elements plus the organic matter the fertility of the soil Is greatly Increased. This means bet ter grain, fruits, seeds, yields of hay and since any of the legumes will make good ensilage this ' means " better live stock. Above all the land is better, not poorer, than at the start. Housing for Oregon . Poultry Important An instructive meeting was held Tues day evening when Routledge Seed- and Kloral company acted as host to about 150 people interested in poultry Judge Geo. W. Masterson. an author- Ity on poultry diseases, who represents the Oermo company of California. Rave . a very interesting talk about the future Of the poultry buHtnew. Masterson says that while soil is the most important consideration in California, in Oregon proper housing Is the foremost question when taking up the poultry industry, for most any of the woil here is suitable. He explained chicken diseases and dis sected some fowls, showing as well as explaining exactly what their ailments were and the best remedy in each case. Music and singing made up the rest of the program. Fruit Growers May Increase As'n. Stock Directors of the Eugene Fruit Grow ing association favor an increase of stock of from 1100,000 to a total of J2r0,000 and a recommendation has been made that the stockholders, at the an nual meeting to be held here January St, vote te increase the stock to this amount A dividend of 8 per cent has been voted stockholders. Livestock Men to Meet Spokane, Jan. 24. Federal Farm Loan Organizations Hold State Meet in Salem The Oregon State Association of Na tional Farm Loan organizations will hold its second annual meeting January 27 and 28 at Salem. D. G. O'Shea, presi dent of the Spokane Federal Land bank, will address the meeting. Aside from Mr. CVShea's address no set program has been arranged, and it is the Inten tion of Charles M. Emery, president of the state association, to devote most of the time of the meetings to open discus sions of the various problems that con front the farm loan associations. A. C. Bornstedt of Salem, secretary treasurer of the Hoskins and Horticul tural associations, has charge of the local arrangements. 0. A. C. Hens Capture Egg Contest Prize Oregon Agricultural College. Corvallis, j Jan. 17. A pen of college Barred Ply- j mouth Rocks won first prize for the; month of December in the egg laying ; contest at the Western Washington sta- tlon, Payallup, Wash., according to word received by James Dryden, professor of j poultry husbandry. The record of the! pen of five birds was 1S2 eggs, an aver-, age of 26.4 a hen, or approximately 84 per cent of a possible egg yield, which is considered a remarkable showing. Fifty pens are entered In the contest, a majority of the poultry being White Leghorns. The pen having the highes value" of eggs for November and De cember was also a Corvallis pen of the O. A. C. strain of White Leghorns, owned by John A. Henson. The value of the eggs laid by the pen in the two months was $13.69. Host Show to he Held A hog show and sale will be held at Salem February 4, when 43 head of brood sows and gilts, from the champion pro ducing breeders of the West, will be sold. G. M. Harvey of Boyd. Seott, Coaaty Ageat At a, meeting In the Commercial club rooms at Oregon City last Saturday a number of progressive Jersey owners formed the Clackamas County Jersey Cattle club. Men and women were pres ent from all parts of the county, some of whom had traveled 25 miles to become charter members of the new organiza tion. A constitution and by-laws were adopt ed and officers elected as follows : Presi dent. N. H. Smith, Oregon City ; vice president, John Cole, Molalla : secre tary. Mrs. Anton Malar, Boring. There are over 50 breeders of regis tered Jerseys in the county and it is expected that these will all join. In order to keep the interest In Jer seys at the proper pitch, meetings will be1 held regularly every two months at different farms In the communities wihere there is strong Jersey sentiment. There was considerable competition for the first meeting, to be held February 28. The choice fell to the Twilight com munity near Oregon City. A program was arranged to be held at D. F. There promises to be some good competition between the two organisations, which in the end will re sult in driving the scrub out altogether. It is considered probable the two clubs will cooperate in such work as getting the county cleaned up from tuberculo sis and other contagious diseases.
