JUCKLEY GOES 10 ORIENT FOR PORT ON TRADE MISSION California Man Named by Port land Commission to Represent V- City as Shipping Agent. The Port of Portland commission ; at its meeting thin afternoon, named J. K. Buckley of Oakland, Cal.. to .. represent the commission and the ' city of Portland generally on a trade mission to the Orient. Buckley will so as a general shipping ', . agent, informing business men of the Kar East of the facilities of the port and of the Import and export possibilities. . Appointment was made as a result of the strongest recommendations by Presl- dnt Max. H. Houser of the commiiwior,. )t was Houser who announced at the " meeting JO days ago that a commercial ' agent to rpreent Portland in the Far Kast was absolutely necessary. Houser said that he would himself hire such an agent if the port commission or some . other public body did not take action within 30 day. The salary will be $3000 a year and an additional 17500 is provided for the expenses necessary In carrying on the campaign of education in the Orient. Buckley la widely "acquainted with trade conditions In the Far East as he - traveled extensively In Chins, Japan, Singapore and through the Dutch East Indies. Buckley is one of the few white men to master any of the Chinese dialects, speaking Hok Quan Chinese, that used by the merchants generally in the trade in the East Indies. He also speaks Spanish, French and Malay. EGERIA HAS HEAVY CARGO Barge Starts to Unload Federal Sur plus Supplies. Work of unloading the barge Egeria at St Johns concentration yard of the supplies owned by the Emergency Fleet corporation after completion of the ship building program was started this after- .jioon. These supplies were loaded from the " government controlled yards at Astoria, but hardly a dent was made in the pile, according to officials of the supply and ' sales division, so huge Is the accumula tion. The materials on board the Egeria, which is loaded down to her marks and with the decks piled high, comprise all manner of shipbuilding material. It is expected that at least a week will be consumed in the unloading, after which the barge will be towed to the Coast Shipbuilding company yard,Xln South Portlandfor completion as an off shore lumber schooner. The Egeria has been purchased by a syndicate of Port land men, headed by H. E. PonnelL Other barges are to be sent to Astoria in a few days to pick up additional ma terial for the St Johns yard, SALES MANAGER RETURNS Yoakum of Fleet Corporation Back; New Plans Due. With the return to the coast of C. O. Yoakum, general manager of the west ern district, supply and sales division, Kmergency fleet corporation. Important announcements in regard to plaits for selling surplus material left after the completion of the government program in the Northwest are expected in a few days. Yoakum is expected in San Franclcco , Thursday, and Jay S. Hamilton, assist ant in charge of sales, and J. W. Wood, assistant in charge of the material sec tion, will leave tonight to meet htm. The three officials will meet with California officials , for a few days, then return to Portland and later go to Puget Sound for a like conference. The Foundation company paid ap proximately $50,000 for 5200 pieces of piling stored at San Francisco, in a sale completed Tuesday by the sales and supply division. . The material Is to be used in construction of a pier, in San Francisco harbor for the Standard Oil company. LOADS FOOD FOn INDIANS Algonquin to Supply Shortage of Pro visions at Alaska Canneries. Astoria, Jan. "51. The coast guard cutter Algonquin left Tuesday morning for Seattle, where she will take on pro visions for Indians at various fishing canneries in Alaska, who are said to be short of supplies. She will remain In Alaskan waters during the fishing sea son, acting aa patrol. No otl.er vessel la to replace her here. The Algonquin was assigned to the mouth of the Columbia river last Sep tember. The vessel was formerly in the coast guard service at various points along the Atlantic coast, and served in the navy as a convoy vessel between Marwick, Mitchell & Co. The steamer City of Topeka of the Portland-San Francisco passenger serv ice of the Admiral line, will leave Se attle, where It Is now undergoing re pairs on the Todd drydock. January 24, taking a general cargo but no passen gers direct to San Francisco. Announce ment of this was made today by K. O. McMlcken. general passenger agent for the Pacific Steamship company, who is in Portland today. The Topeka will resume its customary sailing j from San Francisco on Janu ary 80 and will leave Portland again for the South on February 3. BOILERS WILL GO SOUTH Steamer Poulsen Scheduled to Leave With Three Boilers Today. The steamer Johan Poulsen was ex pected to leave down from the Willam ette Iron Steel Works today with three marine toilers for shipbuilding plants at San Francisco. The Poulsen came up from Westport, Tuesday night. where a portion of its lumber cargo was taken aboard, and will return to West port to complete before starting south, This makes six boilers loaded at the Willamette Iron Works this week, three being taken out Tuesday afternoon for Seattle by the steamer F. 8. Loop. They will be delivered to the Tood Dry dock & Shipbuilding company. ALL ALONG THE WATERFRONT Frank O'Conner. resident manager of the Pacific Steamship company, was advised this morning by wireless that the shipping board freighter Aniwa. coming to Portland Irom Honolulu to load flour for the Atlantic, was 300 miles off the mouth of the Columbia at 8 o'cTock Tuesday night. The vessel in expected In the river Thursday morning. .The wooden steamer Owatama will complete bunkering at the Fifteenth street terminal today, and will leave down for St. Helens Thursday to take cargo at, the tie booms. The Owatama will go"o the United Kingdom uVider operation and management of the Pa cific Steamship company. me vessel was recently completed at Astoria. The shipping board tanker Imlay, with Its cargo of creosote oil from Amster dam, was at the plant of the St Helens Creosote company this morning, 'dis charging. A large portion of the lm lay's cargo, which came from Europe, was left at points on the Sound. After finishing at St. Helens, the vessel will proceed to San Francisco and probably take grain to Europe. The ligntnouso tenaer aianzamia is replacing the Important No. 6 nun buoy in the channel at the mouth of the Columbia river with a new gas and whittling buoy, according to an an nouncement by Superintendent Robert Warrack of the seventeenth llKhthouae district today. Representatives of the United States steamboat Inspection service were aboard the steamer Pawlet at the Standifer yards in Vancouver this morning, con ducting the hydrostatic tests. The Paw let was launched Tuesday morning. The motorshjp Oronite was reported en route from San Francisco for the Columbia river today. The Oronite will load lumber st Westport for Sydney, Australia, on orders furnished by the Douglas Fir Exploitation & Export com pany. The vessel is charted by A. F. Thane & Co., Kan Francisco. Completing Its cargo at the North Bank dock, the United States army transport Marica was shifted to the Portland flouring mills at 8:15 this morning to finish. . It is expected that the transport will be ready to get away by Sunday. All beacons in the Columbia river which were carried away by the Ice in December have now been replaced ex cept one, according to Robert Warrack, superintendent of the seventeenth light house district This Is the gauge pile beacon in Astoria harbor. West Cayote Arrives February 7 Arrival of the steamer West Cayote otsthe European-Paclflo line in Port land harbor to load cargo for the United Kingdom and the continent, wll not be until February 7, the Columbia-Pacific Shipping company announced today.
