WHOLESALE PRICES IN PORTLAND PIMAIUOET ' BASKET By Hyaiaa H. Cokes Consumers should not be fooled by the present weakness In the potato mar ket st wholesale because apparently It la much of a bluff. The time to buy potatoes is when everyone) wants to sell. Just at this time consumers can purchase ' their stock for slightly lower values, and it would not be at all a bad Idea to pur chase a sack or two for future require ments. Care should be taken not to secure frosted stock, and If good potatoes can be secured there is no doubt that money can be saved, by taking immedi ate advantage of the situation. It Is not likely that potatoes will sell materially lower at any time during the Immediate future and the outlook for the future is for higher values. The following prices are average ones than con sumers are expected to pay at retail stores. Qual ity quoted ia the average, fancy stuff being slightly higher and inferior stuff fractionally lower. In the Pacific Northwest there is practically no Inquiry for ap ples from eastern sections, but some im provement is noted In the Rochester, N. T., district, although the market there remains weak and the few sales con firmed are made from storage. Sales of apples in the big consuming sections of the east are at figures that are below those recently received. Some of the big markets are doing such a nominal business at this time that only nominal values can be quoted. Consuming markets report: Philadelphia 18 cars on track, including broken. The new price in less than carload lots will be $13.15 per barrel. At the new price, flour Is still under the wheat basis and Is selling at lower prices In this territory than in any other market, considering the price of wheat In Minneapolis - spring wheat patent Is Quoted at S14.7SI5.S0. while in Kansas City hard winter wheat patent is quoted at $14 14.65 per barrel. The price of wheat here at this time is even higher than in the East While it is true that less demand Is shown for Pacific Northwest wheat from the East, coast millers continue j to seek supplies and there is no dlmin- j ishing of premium in the price. j Flour market is firmer as a result of the high premium that millers have been lorcert to pay for their supplies and the advance in price forecast some time ago is drawing very grains and hay show less activity, but in general no change .was announced in the price for the day. Stocks closed strong Tuesday after a ses sion of inactivity. Price fluctua tions were not large in any issue. Professionals were hoping that the advance of the rediscount rate In vented by them last week would be announced by the federal re serve board after Its regular meet ing In Washington. Of course no announcement was made, for, aa ex plained, no advance had been recommended yet. What may be done by the Chicago, meeting Is another story. Money renewed at 7 and loaned as low as 6. Sterling went to within one-half of a cent of the lowest price ever known. With sterling at the previous low rec ord Wall street Is expecting a still fur ther decline of Importance. With the na tionwide effort in progress to restrict currency and cut down rredits, inter national trade Is hampered and produc tion ia likely to be reduced at home. America is therefore In no humor to buy anything abroad. A policy of cur tailment. If persisted In by the banks, will beyond question succeed In bringing about a commercial panic such as the professional bears in Wall street much desire. It was significant that the greatest activity today was in lightweight stocks. Famous Players was really the market leader. It broke 1 points and recov ered 2. The company is understood to be making tremendous earnings. Busi ness s especially good In all non-productive enterprises. In all productive business the high prices have created so much ill will that demoralisation 's setting in. 5925 5900 6100 6150 6150 6200 5950 597 ITfc DELIVERT NOTICES CAl'SE AS EARLT DECLINE IN COTTON New York. As every person in America is a cltlaen of a defi nite political division and connected di rectly with soma Industrial orranliatlon that gives life to the nation it should be the object of all to eliminate waste as far as possible. The greatest factor toward thla end ia Individual thrift By frugality on the part of all Americans the nation be comes stronger industrially and other wise. Thrift In the nation demands pru dent and careful management of our resources and should not be planned on the part of the individual for the pres ent only. .The nation has a continuous existence and our lives are but a con tinuation of the work accomplished be fore us. We are building for those who are to come. Those who follow us must not be made to suffer by our thrift less ness. All good Americana must play big parts In their dally lives. In a thrifty manner, leaving no mortgages for others to pay. To further cultivate the habit of thrift National Thrift Week was planned, of which tomorrow la "Thrift in Industry Day."
