Boschke of Port land, was the sponsor. After the cere mony Mine ' Boachke was presented with a diamond and sapphire bracelet. The Pawlet will be, turned over to the . government within 10 days, according; to announcement of officials today. The , Bearport, last of the government con tract vessels, is still on the ways, and launching is expected about February 1. The Pawlet has been assigned by the - shipping board to the Pacific Steamship company for February sailing on Its - Portland-Oriental line. The Bearport will carry flour to New York and prob ' ably will leave late in February also. - The latter is underasslgnment to the - Columbia-Pacific Shipping company. Theso vessels, like the other eight built on' government contract, are of ' VC0O deadweight tonnage, i Aftor the last - of the government ships are out of the way the Standifer energies will be concentrated on the eight vessels for private Interests. NTESPELEM IS SOLD Willamette Navigation Company to Change Boat Into Oil Burner. ' Ownership of the river steamer Nee pelem, which has been under lease by the Willamette Navigation company from the Miller Navigation company of Spokane, passed to the former corpora tion January 1, according to informa tion received today. The vessel is now at the Kelson shipyard in South Port land, on the ways, its coal burning power equipment being changed to oil burninf . Water tanks are being en larged and other equipment remodeled or added to give the steamer greater power and steaming- range. The price figuring in "this deal is not mentioned. The Nespelem is one of eiglit boats now being operated by the Willamette Navi gation company in the service of the paper mills at Oregon City and Camas and in general freighting, it is ex pected that the vessel will be refloated by February 1. OIL TANKER IS COMING HERE Shell Company's New Boat, Silver Shell, Due Here Soon. The first of the Shell Oil company's fleet to enter the Columbia river will be the tankei" Sliver Shell, a new vessel which left San Francisco Sunday night for Portland with a cargo of fuel oil. With a capacity of about 65,000 bar rels, the Silver Shell will be one of the largest of the tanker fleet operating be tween Portland and the storage plants In the South. The vessel was constructed on the East copat about the time the United States entered the war. Although intended for the West coast oil service, the Silver Shell was com mandeered as a cargo carrier by the government and useB. in the Atlantic. Only recently it was released, and has already made several trips between San Francisco and Puget Sound points. The vessel is expected Thursday morning at Gasco. BRINGS CARGO OF CREOSOTE Tanker Arrives With First Shipment Since War Started. The tank steamer Imlay, which sailed from Seattle today for the Columbia river, brought the first foreign cargo of creosote to the Northwest since the war started In 1914. The vessel has about 1.000,000 gallons, one third of its total cargo, for the 'St. Helens Creosote com pany which will be discharged at the St. Helens plant. If. is understood that the tanker has discharged the balance of its cargo on Puget Sound.. The Imlay sailed from Amterdam The creosote Is a German product. The traffic in this commodity started in 1912, and continued freely until com merce was stopped at the outbreak of the war.. SHIP MATERIALS ARE BEING SOLD Emergency Fleet Sales on the Sound Amount to $250,000. Jay S. Hamilton, assistant to the head of the sales and supply division of the Emergency Fleet corporation, and Ci. M. McBride. sales assistant, have Just returned from Tacoma. the net result of their trip- being the sale of goods amounting to $250,000. These were sur plus supplies In the shipbuilding plants and the concentration yards and were sold for all kinds of shipping construc tion .and repair work. A large consignment of Iron bars, stored at the St. Johns concentration yard, and sold recently under private agreement, will be barged down the river to St. Johns municipal terminal ! for loading on the steamer Pawlet, sall 1 ing for the Orient in February. If is hoped to have this vessel ready for the sea again by Sunday. The -Green Star liner Ctauseus. last of the four constructed in the two South Portland steel yards, and now at San Francisco, Is loading the largest con signment of beans ever taken from the Pacific coast according to reports from the Golden Gate. Under management of Struthers A Dixon, the vessel will carry to Hamburg and Danzig, under auspices of the American relief admin istration, 6000 tons, or 135,000 bags of beans. The wooden - steamer Marsh field, which is proceeding to Portland from San Francisco to load ties for the J United Kingdom under management of built in 1918 by the Coos Bay Ship building company, ana was tne secona product of that yard. The vessel has btcn operating in the Pacific since it was launched. The steamer Santa Barbara arrived in the river at 6 o'clock this morning and left up for Wauna. The steamers Tahoe ana santa Mo nica, the former from Westport, and the latter from the Peninsula mill. Portland, sailed for the south from Astoria, lumber laden, this morning. The San U am arrived at Astoria from San Pedro at midnight and headed for Tongue Point. Merchants Exchange advices this morning reported arrival of the wooden steamer Bellbroak at Birmingham. Wallace W, Wilder, a rancher of Fteewater. will be placed on trial here Wednesday; charged with the murder of Bert W. H. McNeece on September 14. 1913. The death of McNeece. a young returned soldier, was reported In Freewater .as a case of suicide, following the finding of his dead body on Wildei-e ranch. Wilder" story was that McNeece shot himself, then ran. jumped across an ir rigation ditch and fell dead. So far as is known there were no witnesses to the shooting.
