URGES MEN ' Marshf ield Officer ' Loses Life in Effort To Save Ship's Safe - ! Uarshfield. Jan. 1. Deputy Sheriff W. H. Jeiter. who was drowned near Cape Blanco Wednesday, lost his life 1n an effort to get at the fore part of the wrecked J. A. Chanslor to save the hip's safe, which waa supposed to be there. A story was afloat that a safe containing considerable money was aboard the wreck. Jeter thought that It was hla duty to attempt to get It for fear that it might be stolen. He had been left to guard the beach against any beach combing. Together with' Eugene White, Carl White and Charles Wright of Port Or ford they hauled a boat from that place and launched it, but the boat waa cap alaed.. The .three others got ashore a&fely. Jeter' body came ashore later and was recovered and taken to Port Orford, awaiting directions fron the young deputy's mother. The one that kept bla hat on glared at me and Jammed hla Jaws, as much as to infer that he didn't have to take his hat off for any dame that happened - to, take the same elevator and be'd like to see anybody make him do it ! There has alwaya been an argu ment as to whether a man should remove his hat in an elevator and I guess there ain't any reason In the world why he should, and X guess we women wouldn't think much about It one way or the other so far as we are personally con cerned, but Just the same It gives a woman a different opinion of the man! I couldn't help thinking about it all the way down in the car. t When a man removes bis hat for the ladles In a car. It isn't so much a, compliment to the women as a' compliment to himself. You klnda feel when they doff, their KelHes that It ain't so much on account of you as a habit from good bringing up and from paying respect to the women of their house hold and their acquaintance. You think from the charming manner In which one man removes his hat that he Is the sort of man who take off his hat when he meets hia wife. If it Is a man who doesn't know any better you don't think one way or the other about It, but order to be worthy of His benedictions. (L N. S.) Because he refused to exonerate her nf unfaithfulness in the eyes of her hus band. Mrs. Kate UbVtS. th mother of three Children, today stabbed to aeatn Brvan Pownall. a nephew of William G. Pownall, head of the pownall Luna ber company. Mm. TJhl was trapped In her apart ment by her husband, Mervtn TJhl,.- In company with Pownall. He accused her of unfaithfulness and ordered her from his home. The young wife summoned Pownall and pleaded with him to tell her husband that it was Pownall's fault he was narlne her attention. Pownall refused and Mrs. Uhl seised a butcher's knife and stabbed him over the heart. Pownall's home is at Jtomney, W. Va. An inquest into the-affair will be held this afternoon. Mrs. TJhl Is being held. in Paul C. Dormitzer Accused of Passing Bad Check for $10 Chris Aspros, 171ft Third street, Fri day swore out a warrant for the arrest of Paul C. Dormitzer, Portland attorney, who, says Dormltser, gave him a worth less check for $10. Aspros avers that after he cashed Dormltzer's check, the Amer ican Security bank of Vancouver, against which the check was written, refused payment, claiming no funds to Dormlt ser's credit Milfoil Wmen Want A New High School , Milton, Jan. 1.
