' labor statistics today!. Prices of
some staples have gone down, these
V reports showed, while prices of
others have Increased. ' The average
has been upward during the last
year.'
That the government Is making a little
, progress In its fight to lover living
. costs Is indicated by the -fact that since
August, the month the president directed
(. Attorney General Palmer to investigate
and to um all means to bring prices back
' io normal, there has been a drop in the
cost of some foods.
Hoard steak, for Instance, has dropped
' since August from 39 cents to 37.9
- cents a pound. Flour dropped a small
fraction of a cent, as did sugar. Pota
toes were down more than a cent
. pound. Against this there ,has been an
increase of 3 cents in eggs, close to 2
cents in butter, and one-fifth of a cent
, In milk per quart.

was a member of Xaurel lodge, A. F. at
A. M. of Roseburg, the Klks at Mc-
Mlnnvllle and the Modern Woodmen of
America of Portland. Funeral services
were held at the Flnley. chapel at 2:30
p. m. Wednesday with Interment In Rose
City cemetery.

mandant of the Coast Guard if a life-
saving station cannot be established at
once In the vicinity of Port Orford. He
has been informed that authority for
it exists under an old statute.
Attention was directed to the matter
by a letter from Willis T. White Sr. of
Port Orford, who cited the recent di
aster to the tanker J. A. Chanslor,
Power boats could have soon visited the
wreck, says White, had there been
Ufesavtng station near Cape Blanco.

has sent a report to the public lands
committee riving warm approval to
Senator McNary's bill for inclusion of
the Diamond lake region in the Crater
Lake national park. The senator an
nounces he will ask early consideration
of the measure by the senate.

One day after the death of Asbury
Belleu, his aged wife, Mrs. Levlna Be
lleu, worn out by nursing him and
stricken with sorrow, died Tuesday at
the family home. 560 Clinton street. The
aged pioneer came to Oregon from Jop-
lln. Mo., 70 years ago. The couple cele
brated their fifty-eighth wedding anni
versary Christmas day.
Surviving them are six children : Bert
O. of Lebanon, Jess. C. of Alderdale.
Wash.; Oscar and Fred E. , Belleu. of
Portland. Mrs. G. E. Seeley and Mrs.
R. E. Fepperman of this city. Funeral
arrangements are in charge of Miller &
Tracey.
Mrs. Cordelia Dorrell Braden
Funeral services for Mrs. Cordelia
Dorrell Braden, who died in San Fran
cisco December 23, - were held at the
Flnley ! chapel Monday afternoon, the
Rev. WL O. Eliot officiating. ... Mrs.
Braden was born in Indiana, October
1, 1341. and had resided for many years
in this city. She Is survived by her
husband. William Braden, one son and
three daughters, Frank Braden, Mrs.
Minnie Campbell of San Francisco, Mrs.
Bessie Whitehead ' and Mrs. Cora
Howes. Two sisters, Mrs. Annie Fuller
and Mrs. John Marshall, reside in this
city.

break of Saturday, the girls having conl

to passing a hack saw to the prisoners.

J. W. A. Belleu died Monday at
his home, 660 Clinton street, aged 78.
He was born in Joplln, Ma. and came
to Oregon 70 years ago. Belleu and his
wife celebrated their fifty-eiRhth wed
ding anniversary Christmas day. Mrs.
Belleu is critically ill. Five children
and a number of grandchildren are liv

Samaritan hospital Tuesday morning. He
had been a traveling salesman for
