It peeps behind the scenes into a realm of unreality, heavy with the odor of grease paint and glittering with the tinsel of frivolity. Philip Pelz rene-.ved acquaintance with Portland friends yesterday when he ap peared as director of the new strand symphony orchestra. Director Pelz will remain with the Strand permanently. He followed the action of the picture yesterday with skill and won applause with the special orchestra numbers. SUNSET In no sense Is "The Unpar donable Sin," the new feature at the Sunset, a preachment. It is an absorb ing tale of love and adventure, with incidents of the World War as a back ground. And yet, those seriously in clined, will find from the manner in which the action- is presented, much of a philosophical nature to Interest -them. The film play Is a story of a man of middle age who proposes marriage by letter to a young Kngliwh girl, and the wrong woman receives the proposal and believes it was meant for her. She had arrived at the age of spin sterhood and was taking care of the young motherless niece of her brother. When the beautiful young niece made her debut in society the spinster loaned her a dainty lace handkerchief, which the girl dropped accidentally during the evening. The man picked it up and, seeing the name "olly" embroidered on the piece of lace, 'assumed that this was the girl's name. Me became infatuated with her and before going on an exploring trip he wrote for her hand. The real Dolly, Uie handsome spinster, received the let ter, and, was accepted by mail Just be fore sailing. In the meantime the young niece be came engaged to a youthful curate. The terrible mistake In identity, with all its heart harrowing consequences. Is brought out in an emotional and ap pealing manner when the explorer re turns. All the wedding presents were about to be returned by the heart broken- and humiliated spinster, when sud denly the explorer finds that a truth has suddenly da near letting his great life's greatest happiness go from him by default. And there is a happy ending pro vided for this pathetic and well' nigh tragic story. An English cast inter prets the principal roles. "Mutt and Jeff cartoon ; kinograms and an Outing-Chester, are the fillers on the program. LIBERTY "Upstairs and Down," a comedy drama with pep. dash and thrills that will entertain and delight any moving picture audience In the coun try, is the offering this week at the Liberty, with Oilve Thomas as the star. Olive Thomas as Alice Chesterton gives a delightful characterization of the "baby vamp" who was happiest when fho was entangled in a Web of IntHgue and trouble. Thl3 adorable little mis chief maker is engaged to Tom Carey, but to her that Is only an ordinary inci dent In the wheel of life. At a large house party in Long Island she "vamps" Terry O'Keefe, an Irish boy. with a cap tivating smile and a bewitching brogue. He is the means of furnishing her with cne of her many "happiest" moments. She follows him to the city and when later he really falls in love with Alice's sister, Betty, and asks her to marry him. Alice says that Terry has compro mised her and must marry her. Eventu ally thing8 straighten themselves out to the satisfaction of all concerned. "Upstairs and Down" is a picturlza tion of the famous stage success of the Fame name by Frederic and Fanny Hat ton. With its direction by Charles Gib- lyn and cast Including Robert Ellis drama Is declared one of the best pro ductions the screen has ever had. "Back to the Kitchen." a Sennett of fering, 13 the comedy feature and the Pathe Weekly is an added number. CIRCLE Douglas Fairbanks makes his reappearance as "Old Doc Cheer ful" in "The Knickerbocker Buckaroo" which will be shown at the Circle today and tomorrow. The moral of this story is that doing something for somebody is a worthy and laudable ambition, but that unselfishness can sometimes be carried too far, and unless guided by calm Judgment, may bring the unselfish one results he doesn't expeci, and, sec ondly, that the proper place to start any reconstruction in character is at home. Douglas plays the part of Teddy Drake, wealthy New Yorker, who de cides that his life is all wrong because of his selfish qualities and starts out to do unselfish things in the world, whloh gets him Into a series of amusingly complicated situations laid in the west. Fairbanks was the first to introduce constructive philosophy via the screen route. He has taught millions the way to laugh, because of an intelligent un derstanding of certain conditions of life. His latest picture deals with one of life's greatest evils, that of selfishness. We are selfish because we don't realize was developed by the Fairbanks scen ario staff, which Includes i Hon Banks, Joseph Henaberry, Frank Condon, Ted Reed and director Albert Parker. STRAND Nazimova in her latest and already famous production, "The Brat," formally opened the Strand the atre yesterday. The opening celebrated the completely renovated theatre, the new policy which changes the program from one featuring vaudeville to one in which the largest cinema productions will be sltbwn and the introduction of the new 25 piece Strand orchestra. With the showing of "The Brat" the new policy of booking special features has been put Into effect by the Strand theatre.
