' Extensive Construction Needs. MILLS ARE PROSPERING NOW Sustained Stream of New Orders and Rising Prices Keep Plants , at Work to Limit of . Capacity. Building activities in England, France and Belgium, will offer an enormous field for exportation of lumber from ' Northwest mills, 'according: to R. A. Xalley, secretary of the' Pacific Coast Shippers association, who recently re turned from a trip to Europe. Prices con tinue to rise and the Industry generally is working: on a profitable basis. Several lumber mills in Oregon and Washington have been destroyed by fire during the past month- Owners of these properties plan to rebuild, and there are a number of new mills under construction. : Other mills will enlarge their capacities during the summer. WHITE CEDAE TIE BRINGS FlOW OF OBDERS FROM EAST Marshfleld. I June 23. Cooa county mills are receiving large orders f orj cross ties for snipment to eastern rail roads. The superiority of - the white cedar timber of this section is proving an incentive to an Increase in the vol ume of the tie industry. The Myrtle POtnt Lumber company is worklrig on an border for 7000 ties for the Wabash railroad, to be shipped to Hannibal, Mo. Orders are- also coming to Coos county mills from the New York Central and Erie lines. The Southern Pacific company re cently placed an order here for 250,000 feet of timbers In large dimensions. tton,' waa .recently purchased by Clem Rogers of San ' Francisco, and will be operated la the production of fir lumber and box material. - ' , : . . The mill is well equipped and is easily accessible, to rail and cargo transporta tion facilities. The new. management proposes to cut for both, foreign and do mestic consumption. This property was formerly known as the Clatsop mill. It is one of the best equipped mills of its size' in the state -and has-ample yardage for the accommodation of . local business. Timber Stands Purchased Corvallis, June 23. An eastern com pany has purchased large ; tracts of standing timber near Alpine, in Benton county, and plans the immediate erec tion of two sawmills of 100,000 feet daily capacity each. The mills will be located at Glenbrook, and contracts have 'been let for the construction of 40 houses for the accommodation of employes. Work Is being rushed on building operations. Page of Eureka, IIL, recently visited Astoria to arrange with local mills for handling timber from his holdings along the line of the Lewis & Clark railroad. Logging operations for the government were car ried on in that section during the war, and Mr. Page arranged for a continu ance of operations. Even on "The top of the world," as the vast snowbound . region north of "the Arctic circle is known to' explorers, prospectors and mushers of the northern trails, the city of Portland is looked upon as a mecca for tourists. Long time residents of the land of . the mid night sun are laying aside the "stakes" which will carry them to future homes in Oregon, where life's autumn may be spent. This Is what Judge Martin F. Moran, for 28 years a resident of Alaska, now spending several months In Portland, says.- Judge Moran lived , for 12 years north of the Arctic circle, and has the distinction of owning a homestead of 320 acres on the Kobuk river, the farth est north of any homestead In Uncle Sam's territory. He also bears the distinction of having represented the farthest north territory of the United States in the legislature of Alaska. Mr. Moran has agreed to tell the peo- Youth Killed When He Is Hurled Tinder Speeding Streetcar Salem, June 23. Theodore (Ted) How ard, 15 years old, died at the Salem hos pital at 1 o'clock Sunday morning from injuries received, in an accident late Saturday night, in which he was thrown from his motorcycle in a collision with an automobile, falling under a passing street car. Howard's left hip and right shoulder were baly crushed and his skull frac tured. He was partially conscious when taken to the hospital and an operation was performed, but he. died a few hours later.
