' Captain Ferguson, who In an arnent -admirer of the capabilities of th j wooden m6tornhip. sees great trade pos ' Bibillties for American ships operating - in the Chinese trade. Java trade, and with Australia. He says that big re . turni are assured for this class of busi ness. In a letter to Judge Ceorge J. Cam y eron, dated at Tort Said, Kgypt. April 4. Captain Ferguson says : : SHIP IS BOLD "I was just thinkins of you. so as ; vV Wi r. im i thmiitht that T tons. They could well afford it, "1 shipped a crew of Chinese, but Could get no mates ; in fact. I had none when I left the coast, as the shipping board was taking all they could get, so i' I put three of the most Intelligent men I tr. Imd the watches and let her ero. ' After trying to -get mates at Shanghai and not succeeding, I did the next best .thing and put a couple of Chinese t,o keep 'watch and paddled my own canoe "'.to the next port which was Sourabaya,' . Java. We got there in good time, then we went to Colombo, Ceylon ; left there . March 10 and here we are all safe and sound and right side up. ' GETS SALARY RAISE "I wll have the distinction of bring ' ing this ship practically around the world without the big array of officers. . The company, when they understood ' what 1 was doing? promptly raised my wages to $500 a month and I get a bonus besides. ' w" . "They want me to sign a contract for , a year, but me for Portland as I am homesick. Some of the skippers wonder . at me attempting this alone, but they . i forget where I originated, also it is Just getting used to it, and a Chinese Is like any other kind' of person if you ' treat him right and if you show him . you are and Intend to be boss he will ".be velly good man.' " "In all my travels in the Orient I have , noticed that there is a vast trade that . can-be done with American ships. Take this ship, for instance. She was built" In Portland, manned by an American crew, got the cargo from an American firm. All the foreign firms did was to buy the ship and collect the freight. Our present cargo pays for the vessel and $80,000 above. In fact, the owners have never seen the ship, so why couldn't the ship haye been run from Portland and the money kept in the country. . SHIPS ABE ECOITOMICA1. "These ships are very economically - run. We only burn 13 barrels or oil a day. - We employ no firemen. They fire themselves automatically ; all we have ! oilers. The oil ' Is a big saving on cargo space. ,The engines have been well tried out and they are as reliable as steam and i are the coming, if not already arrived, ship of the future. The engine that Macintosh & Seymour puts out can't be beat; also when lying in port the en gine does , not consume any oil like the , steamer, as the steamer has to keep steam up all the time. The Diesel can , 8 tart up on five minutes' notice. "I am leaving for Marseilles today so X,??C.t t0 get there on tne 19ln and i will leave for the coast at once. I ex j. P0- of course, to visit Scotland for a . couple of weeks first, so should get to Portland about the end of May. . ; V1 hope that the American ships are ; going ahead as there is all kinds of 3 business for them in the Pacific trade , 'with China and Java. You can get all kinds of cargoes of tea, coffee, teak- -"r7. . p: etc" and why can it not be in American ships, in fact ships rsaUing out of Portland? Agents May1 Make Agreement Execution of a separate agreement between shipyard workers and govern ment and plant representatives for the Oregon1 districts has been rumored as a possibility, because of . the alleged un willingness of many of the local mem bers t stand with outside Pacific coast units - In 4 opposing .' the continuance of the Macy scale until October 1, an: the acceptance of other terms as proposed by the plant owners at the recent con ference at Washington. . Result of the coast meeting now be ing held, at Oakland, CaW Is anxiously ' awaited. The demand for a six-hour day, which has ' been , proposed by the Seattle 'union forces, It is declared, may be one point of contention at the Oak land conference.. Employers are willing to grant the 44-hour week, but they have stood out against : the closed-shop policy. The manner of settling; grievances under the Macy plan is to have representatives of the various crafts at the shops deal with the plant officials and federal wage examiner. ' - Providing the unions decide to reject the new working conditions, which in clude adjustment of troubles by means of a board of arbitration, they could still proceed under the old crafts repre sentative plan which was used during the war emergency. CANAL COMPLETED TODAY Kalama Navigation Improvement Com prised Removal 970,000 Yards. Under the direction of United States engineers of the Oregon district, work on the completion of the new ship channel at Kalama is being completed today, thus adding one more advantage to the Columbia river from the navi gation standpoint. The new improve ment, which comprised the removal of 970,000 cubic yards of material, is de sighed to give a depth of 30 feet and width of 300 feet, for' a distance of nearly two miles. The new channel is straight, whereas the old one was crooked, and at places approached dangterously close to the rocky shores of the river. Since the steamer George W. Elder struck a submerged rock and tsan?: In this section years ago, mariners have realized the extreme danger of the river at this point, and numerous at tempts to have the government make the improvement were not consummat ed until Colonel George A. Zinn, U. S. engineer now in charge, undertook the woIK: The covernment dredges Wahkiakum and Multnomah have been on the job. He said that not a drop of water entered the hold of the Rose City. TO TAKE WEST XOHXO SOOX Columbia Pacific Likely to Begin Loading by End of Week.
