While the Washington woolgrowers were In session here last week, some Interesting data regarding the value of the Industry to Yakima valley was compiled, in Yakima, Benton and Kittitas counties some '60 woolgrowers own about 200.000 Bheep, and the increase of the past year, better than 100 per cent, together with some .of the old stock, was marketed at the prevailing good prices, and the wool crop sold at the best average figure the industry has ever known. The railroad shipments show that the 1918 wool crop was 2,230,000 pounds, and while the government took the crop at figures not made known in many instances, it Is estimated that the aver age was ' slightly above. 60 cents, mak ing the returns on wool alone about $1,125,000. The shipment of mutton has been about 1000 cars. Of this amount. 315 cars, mostly spring lambs, were shipped to Chicago. These sold at an average of $10 per head, and the total return to the growers Is around 91, 000,000. The rail road figures show that, in addition to theseshlpments, 820 carloads of sheep were loaded and consigned to other points. A part of this movement was merely a shifting of bands from summer to winter ranges, -but, allowing for this, an most of the shifting is made across country, there still remain more than 600 carloads of mutton shipped to mar kets of the Northwest and Missouri river points, and these sheep, at prevail ing prices, will 'add another $1,750,000 to returns for the year 1918. making the grand total $3,775,000.
