TTwoIl)s 2sille for Cw Merchandise of cJ Merit Only" Mr Tides Run High in English Chan nel, at One Point Reaching Height of 35 Feet. By Fred Loekley Several summers ago I spent my va cation at Bungalow City near Bay ocean In Tillamook county. One aft ernoon I was one of a' party of sumr mer vacationists who walked down the beach to the caves, and on over the hill past the lighthouse to Short Sand beach. With two charming young women from Engfand I sat on the warm sand with my back against a f driftwood log while the, elder, who wa j so graceful In the water that we called 4 a her Venus, and her sister, whom I shall j I call Jean, principally because It Is not j q her name, told me of their home In r England. "Not far from our home," I said Venus, "Is a place called Worle-, f bury woods. It is near Sand bay. All about the edge of the woods is a de fensive barricade of .stone. Within the woods are scores of shallow pits overgrown with Ivy. It is supposed to have been a village of the early Brit ons." Climbs Old Stone Road When she told me of this ancient British camp I hadn't the faintest thought that I would ever see it. I spent an hour Or bo recently In going through Worlebury woods. I climbed the old stone, earth and corduroy road with Its long flight of roughly made steps which rise steeply from Camp Rood near Birnbeck pier. I have visited innumerable mounds, bar rows, fairy lings, cromlechs, Roman walled cities and prehistoric remains In Great Britain and France, but Worle bury camp Is one of the most pictur esque and interesting places I have yet visited. The camp is about 1500 feet long by BOO feet In width. On the seaward side the cliff drops so steeply that from that side the village was safe from attack. A series of ditches back of which is a broad barricade of stone 15 feet high protects the slope of the hillside at the broadest end of the slope. Back of the first stone wall Is a second. Along the length of the camp the dry masonry walls have been thrown down so that there is a continuous rampart of rough edged rocks. At the narrow end of the I camp there Is a gap or entrance which could be easily defended. Ground Carpeted With Iry Tasslng through this entrance which is reached by a steep climb, I came to a park-like opening In the oak and pine trees. I stopped to eat my fill of black berries, for the vines have run riot over the broken etone walls and over the shruhs. Following a woodland path into the growth of mixed timber I soon came to the heart of the camp. On all sides shallow pits were to be seen. They varied In size from five to 10 feet armss and were usually from four to six feet deep. Kvery pit was lined with Ivy. The ground was a solid carpet of ivy. From the trees banners of living green waved in the sea breeze. There were 93 pits In the 10 acre enclosure within the walls. In the old days these pits were covered with mud daubed wattle huts of the early Britons. Dig ging in the pits one can find bits of charred wood. Tarts of 18 skeletons have been found In the pits, the shoul der blades and arm .bones showing deep hacks and gashes, piobably from the short swords of the Roman soldiers, for the stone ramparts, of this old British walled city proved no defense against the Roman legions with their heavy metal shields, their short swords and their stout hearts. Ilomantlc Ride Found On many a moonlight night you will see the young folks of today strolling through the trails of this old camp or sitting In these old pits discussing the furnishing of a home of their own. It is sometimes called Proposal H11U Lov ers' Delight or Honeymoon Camp. The deeply shaded woodland paths, the Ivy grown pits, the moonlight falling In a wealth of golden glory through the trees, the sound of the sea on the rocks near by make It an Ideal spot for lovers' dreams. Weston Is a beautiful residence city In addition to being a favorite summer resort. From Worlebury hill one gets a beau tiful view of the bay and of Bristol channel. Nowhere In all Kurope does " the tide rise as high as in Bristol chan nel. In fact It Is said that there Is but one place the Bay of Fundy, where the waters rush In between the rock shore of Nova Scotia and New Bruns wick where there is a higher tide. At Newport, Or., the tide rises but a few feet. Here at Weston-super-Mare the tide rises 35 feet. At Portsmouth it rises 12 feet, at Plymouth 14 feet, and at Liverpool 16 feet. Bear Old Xorse 5am From the ancient British camp over i looking the modern city at its feet one can see the shore line of Wales, and a few miles off shore two rocky Islands can be seen. " The old Norsemen who harried these coasts called them the "Holmes." and they still bear the old Norse name. One is Steep Holme, the other Flat Holme. Steep Holme lies five miles off shore and consists of 60 rocky and barren acres. When King Harold was defeated at the battle of Hastings, his mother, 'Gltha, took refuge on Steep Holme, and died and waa buried there. The crumbling ruins of the priory ' built there In 1320 are still to be seen near the old fortress. On Flat Holme the three ancient graves there' Are said to be those of three of the four men who murdered Thomas a'Becket In Canterbury cathe dral In 1170 Richard le Bret, William de Tract and Hugh de Norville. From Weston I wen) by the steamer Duke of Devonshire to Wales. The day was stormy, a gale was on, the boat took twice Its usual time to make the trip. So rough waa it that most of the passengers were seasick. I didn't want to stay around when most of the people were shamelessly exposing to the pub lic gase what they had eaten for break fast, so I went far forward, held to the rati and balanced myself to the rolling or the vessel. We shipped a heavy sea, which went completely over me, and so I got. without extra cost, a sea bath . though, of course, I would have pre .( t erred, to have been wearing a bathing suit In place of my uniform to take my bath. 1 An Enormous Sale of DOMESTICS Friday That, in point of value, outdoes any thing we have held here or seen Thousands and, thousands of yards of much wanted wash fabrics, linens and longcloths, sheets, covers, spreads, tablecloths, napkins at the most unusual reductions for present day values we have had lately or seen.
