TUB . OREGON DAILY. - JOURNAL, PORT tAND, THURSDAY. I NOVEMBER 21. 1918. ' 19 i STATE STILL LAGS IN UJ. VI. DRIVE Official Figures $105,000 Short ' of Goal,, but Subscriptions Are Continuing. Although th officially rsportod fig tores on tha progress of the United War Work campaign laat night show Oregon till 189,760 short of attaining its amended quota of 11,160,000. Stats Di rector O. W. Davidson expressed the belief that belated reports trom outlying districts would put the state safely over the top. Mr. Davidson reported that Oregon had subscribed , $1,082,250 toward the support of the seven organisations represented In the campaign for funds') with which to carry on welfare worn, among the forces v th men and women encased in war work. Although the drive officially closed Wednesday the campaign will "carry on" In those dis tricts which have ai : t failed to attain their quotas. There were two outstanding develop ments In connection with the closing day's drive. One was a report from Harney county which, up to yesterday, had not been heard from since the In auguration of the drive. Harney county, which has been seriously handi capped by reason of the Influenza epi demic which has been raging through out the southeast corner of the state, reported a subscription of $2600 on a $6600 quota with assurances of an early attainment of the full quota. The sec ond develooment was a report from Clat sop county, showing a total subscription of $40,000. nearly zoo per cent on $20,860 auota. Thirty-one counties had gons over the top Dp to last night, but six counties in the state remaining in the "short- col umn. Polk and Washington counties were the only units reaching, the top yesterday. Portland added another $28,000 to Its subscription on the closing day. Its total last night showing $500,oou, wnicn, according to City Directo. Ames, will no doubt be materially increased in the coarse of the next few days. Yakima City and County Over Taklma. Nov. 21. Yakima county and city scored a success In the war work drive and went over the top with a sur plus which will reach $1000 In the city and $8000 In the county. The campaign has been characterised by the number of small donations. A total of 6570 sub scribers is Included in the pledges made. The county quota was $52,000, but this will be exceeded by at least $3000. ac cording to the forecast by the county director, L. O. Janeck. LUXEMBURG FOLK , GREET AMERICANS tracks and wagons guided by calm young men in olive drab. Throughout the dark ness of last night the city echoed to the steady rumble of American army trucks as they passed eastward for sup plies for the advanced units of the army of occupation. A German newspaper in Luxemburg said that the "people at home (In America) must swell with pride at the disciplined and imposing array of the American army of occupation in Luxem burg." The people of Luxemburg, long used to war and soldiers, were deeply Im pressed by the vitally soldier appear ance of the Americans. The doughboys were hailed as real soldiers. American army officers rode with the staff of Marshal Petaln when Metz was entered. Other allied nations were represented as welL Sky Thick With Airplanes The sprinkling of Yankees in the crowd was hailed with shouts of "Long live America." The German element of the city was silent and solemn, but they were in the minority. The whole place was aflame with the French tri-color and there were plenty of American flags, too. General Mangin, who was to have acted as chief of staff to Marshal Pe taln, was unable to do so owing to an in Jury sustained when he was thrown from his horse. As the French and allied troops en tered the fortress the sky was thick with airplanes. During the procession through the cuy, lieutenant tsozon verauraz, a French "ace" with nearly a score of victories to his credit, flew so low that he struck a telegraph pole and the ma chine plunged Into the crowd. The air man was fatally hurt and several spec tatora were decapitated. Oration Given French A mighty ovation was given to the French troops who had. arrived In Metz directly from the battle front. In their muddy, faded horizon blue uniforms the pollus swung into the city with sprigs of green stuck Into the muzzles of their rifles amidst a great deal of clatter and dust kicked up by the heavy trains of artillery. Armored cars still bearing the scars of battle entered the city along with the Infantry. Cannon boomed and church bells rang as the deliverers passed through Mets. Children took a promt nent part In the celebration and there were services of thanksgiving In the churches. The holiday spirit is rampant throughout an of Lorraine. German Statue Spat Upon A feature of the celebration In Metz was the pulling down of the statue of William I, grandfather of the ex-kaiser It stood in a park in the center of the city. A bunch of French soldiers tied chains to the monument and attached them to horses. William soon toppled over, his helmeted head and mailed fist plungrog Into the earth, where they were allowed to stay. Throughout the day sightseers surged about the statue, kicking and spitting upon It. The metal nose was the chief target and it was soon worn smooth by the heavy boots of the French lniantry man. There is much complaint among the people In the. Mets district over the way their food was restricted By trio trer mans. COL ROOSEVELT TO BE IN FRANCE VHEN PRESIDENT IS THERE 1 " . There were great columns of Infantry, followed by rolling trains of artillery and machine gun units. There was an endless procession "of motor trucks and wsgons. While en route to his future home In Hunter, recently, Mr. Carrlck called at the Owl Drue Store in Kansas City, purchased two bottles of Tanlac and made a state ment regarding- his experience with the medicine that will be of Interest to all suffering people. "I have never seen anything-," said Mr. Carrlck, "sell like Tanlac Is selling out on the Pacific Coast, around where 1 lived. A friend of mine actually went seventy-five miles one day to get a bot tle, and knowing- what I do about it now, I believe I would do the same thing, rather than be without it. When I first started taking it I had little idea it would do -me any good, but when I ' tell you I have gained sixteen pounds ' in less than thirty days and am able A to work for the first time in months, you can understand why I talk like I do about it. "Something like a year ago my appe ' tite went back on me and my stomach got ip such a bad fix that nothing I would eat seemed to do me any good. My food would sour soon after meals and keep me belching up sour gas for hours. I suffered terrible pain about my stomach all the time and at times I . would turn so deathly sick that I could hardly retain a thing I had eaten. I dropped off twenty-seven pounds in weight and hardly had strength to raise my hands, and was so nervous for al- i- most six weeks that I hardly slept at 3. all. I finally got down flat of my back In bed wouldn't take a bit of nourlsh ment except a little milk and for five .. weeks I thought sure I would never pull , through. "I was stopping with my nephew in Tacoma at this time, and as he had seen H Tanlac recommended so highly, he went down and trot a bottle for me. Well. sir, by the time I finished my first bot tle: I was on my feet and feeling like , a different man. My appetite picked up rignt away ana 1 soon get so ' f couldn't get enough to eat, and ever sine) Z finished my second bottle I have been feeling strong and fine as you ' please. The sourness, gas and pain has I left my stomach entirely and nothing is barred from my diet. It was about the close of Spring when Tanlao stralght ' ' ened ma op and I worked every day this - Summer at my trade as carpenter, and have felt fine all the time. I don't f- believe I ever enjoyed better health .than I do now. I have personally rec ommended Tanlao to hundreds of people, "' and as I was passing through here to " day I stopped in to get two bottles to ;- carry down to Hunter with me, because Z I don't want to be without it Tanlao Is sold in Portland by the Owl Prut Co. . .(Adv.) Germans Look on Sullenly Br Webb Miller With the Americans Advancing To ward the Rhine, Nov. 20. (U. P.) The American army of occupation Is now standing on the soil of four countries- France, Belgium. LuxemDurg ana ter man Lorraine. Todav's advance resulted in the oc cupatlon of a score of villages and towns. We reached Fontoy and Vltry. in Lorraine, JJw latter tovfn being onlv 10 miles north of Metz. Farther to the left Americans entered the neu' tral duchy of Luxemburg, passing through Keen. The mayor of Luxemburg crossed the lines In an automobile and paid his re spects to General Pershing at Lon guyon, which Is now his headquarters. Michigan and Wisconsin troops, which led the way into Luxemburg, received an ovation along every foot of their march. They entered 15 villages, every one -tdecorated with home-made Ameri can "flags. In German Lorraine the Americans were welcomed by the in habitants of French extraction. Those of German descent looked on sullenly. The Important town of Arlon, in Bel glum, remembering America's food and relief, work throughout the war, gave our troops an extraordinarily warm greeting. The townspeople stood beside the roads all day, cheering themselves hoarse. It was not uncommon to see doughboys carrying one or two children, with chattering French or German boys end girls walking alongside. The Germans sent some staff offi cers to army headquarters to arrange for handing over the material at Lon guyon. These consisted of 35 locomo tives, 300 guns and thousands of rifles. The roads near the Luxemburg frontier ara lined with surrendered cannon. TARALDSON Nor. 20, 1918, at th family residence. 1689 Hodae St.. Dairymen Urged to Keep Organization To Maintain Prices That "the time has come for Oregon dairymen to make a tight organisation in order that they may receive for their milk and butterfat the price that it is worth to the world In food value,'' is asserted by Alma D. Katx, president of the Oregon Dairymen's league, in a call issued this morning for a spe cial meeting of all dairymen at the Central library next Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. "Already an organized effort has been made to cut the price of milk to producers," the announcement contin ues. "The request has been denied. "They (the dairymen) have never re ceived full compensation in the past they can only receive full compensation in the future by organization, and united effort," is another expression used by Mr. Katz in the call for the meeting. Only Limited Profit Allowed to Stores That Sell Turkeys Thanksgiving turkeys must not be sold at a profit In excess of five cents a pound over cost for "cash and carry1 stores and seven cents a, pound over cost for delivery stores, according to Thomas G. farreli, assistant federal food administrator. "The food administration wants to be fair with dealers in this article,". said Mr. Farrell, "and at the same, time the public expects to be safeguarded Dressed turkeys will be an important factor in the poultry 'market for tha next two weeks, and the price cannot be fixed with any exactness, as values will depend upon the supply reaching the market within the next few days. At present, the wholesale price of choice dressed turkeys is 40 cents. which would make the price to ' con . . !. Mm . ,. buiuctd a to ii cents. .: - MEETITfG NOTICES 41 20.
