The officers allegro they found two quart bottles of liquor. They also charge that Bellinger was about to sell a drink as they arrived. He secured his release on $250 bail. The en trance salary will range from $1200 to $1800 a year. A metallurgical labora torian (male) in the engineering sta tion of the naval academy at Annapolis, Md., is also wanted at an entrance sal ary of $4.66 a day. Applications may be filed at any time and blanks may be obtained from M. K. Wlgton, local secretary, civil service examiners ,at the Portland postoffice. Jsry Freet Woman A municipal court jury Thursday returned a ver djet of "not guilty" in the case of Ann Baseel, who conducts a soft drink parlor at 81 North Tenth street, and who was accused of keeping whiskey for sale. Detectives of Lieutenant Thatcher's war emergency squad found many bottles of whiskey buried near the home of Mrs. Baseel. Cheeks Involve WoatiAnna Fass- bender, 208 Adams street, was arrested at a department store Thursday after noon by Detectives Abbott and Hyde, on charges of trying to pass two checks for $15 each, with a forged name. She was released to appear for trial in municipal court this after noon. ALBANY COUNTS ON Opposes Sunday Work Salem. June 21. At a meeting of the Sunday school board of tha First Meth odist church of Salem Wednesday nighU resolution w& auayw - Methodist, people to give the fullest co operation in helping harvest tha crops, but the resolution says the situation does not necessitate working on Sunday. The resolution says: "In view of the urgent necessity for more workers to save the fruit ana berry crops of the Willamette vaney, we. the Sunday school board of the rint Methodist ' church, urge as many of our people as possible to give the fullest cooperation in helping narveai the crops. "We do not believe, however, that the time has come when it Is necessary to work on Sunday and wish to record our selves as opposed to making this use of the Sabbath day." One of tha Sunday aKhool -.classes of the Leslie Methodist church has ar ranged to spend next Sunday picking cherries, and this is what prompted the action by the Sunday school board of the First Methodist church. BUT w. s. n, Cuts Throat With lUzer O. Knight cut his throat late Thurs day night with a rasor and is lying at Good Samaritan hospital in a serious condition. Knight was found in front of 104 North Sixth street on the side walk when the officers arrived. Offi cers Slmpkins and Sta ton Investigated and found the rasor in a hallway. The labor situation is looking better in Marion county, ac cording to reports of government agents who are working with: local people to get enough workers to save the cherry and berry crops. A check wss made Wednesday night of the requests for pickers and it re vealed a shortage of 1184, when com pared with the number of persons who have already signed up to go into the berry fields. But J. R. Coleman, the government agent here, says this did not take into consideration the many persons who have given verbal assur ances that they would .be on hand when the picking season actually begins. A meeting of Salem business men waa held Thursday afternoon and discussed the proposal to close alt business houses In the city either during the forenoon or afternoon each day until the crops are taken cars of. No agreement waa reached, and the . matter . waa referred to the executive committee of the mer chants bureau of the Commercial club for action if the situation becomes more critical. Hydrant Upsets Car Everett Owens, 17 years old, was arrested Thursday night by Patrolman R. C. Brown, who accused him of reckless driving and failure to give the right of way to a car driven by Lieutenant L. R. Camp bell which attempted to cross ttie In-' terseotlon at Eleventh and Couch streets The government machine made a wonderful stop as the driver turned it into the curb in an effort to dodge the delivery truck driven by young Owens, but the auto went . over the eurb and struck a water hydrant which completely overturned the car. Ssnday Hike for Masamas For their Sunday outing the Mazamas have j planned a hike over Twin mountain. They will leave from the North Bank station at 7:30 a. m., buying round-trip tickets to Prindle. The party will de train at Cape Horn and hike back from the Columbia river to the Washougal river, where lunch will be eaten. After lunch the return will be made via Twin mountain, from the summit of which fine views of the Oregon mountains and the Columbia river may be obtained. The party will arrive In Portland at 8 p. m.
