THE OREGON DAILY : JOURNAL POR TXAND MONDAY. JANUARY 21. 1918. V, EMM ICE 1 HOGS FOR COAST IS FIXED BY PACKERS Figure of $15.49 Is One Cent ' Under Chicago MarketA Shortage Is Feared on Coast. ' WANT HEAVIER PRODUCTION Price-Fixing Expected to Bene fit Producers Without Result ing in Added Cost to Buyer. San Francisco, Jan. 21. (I. N. S.) A minimum price of 115.49 a hundred pounds for hogs raised in California. ' Oregon and Washington was fixed today by a voluntary agreement between more ; than 80 Pacific coast packers and the . United States food administration. Colncldentally with this agreement, l 'which will benefit the producers with out resulting in any increased cost to consumers, it was revealed that there exlata today a oork shortage of 30 per i cent ove rthe same period tor 1917. The price fixed is just 1 cent under the food administration minimum ef fective on the Chicago market, and, ac cording to G. B. Cunningham, president , of the California Swine Breeders' asso ciation, it will bring about stimulated production in the coast states and will '. ' Insure an adequate supply for next fall's . demands. . The agreement was made at a con ference called by Joseph P. Cotton, chief of the meat division of the food administration. Ralph P. Merritt. fed- .. era! food administrator for California. who has Just returned from Washlng r ton, presided. Among the packers who signed the agreement were C. C. Colt, Union Meat ' company, Portland; F. ; L. Washburn, ; ; Western Meat company; K. Scott, Cud '; ahy Packing company, Los Angeles; H. " L. Kelley for Wilson & C., Los Ange- les; I. L. Blum, Roth-Blum Packing ; "company, San Francisco ; W. O. For . sythe. Armour Jb Co., Spokane; J. H. Talbot, Universal Packing company, ' Fresno; Charles S. Hardy Packing company, San Diego ; Mauser Packing company, Los Angeles. Action Iferer Taken Before This is the first time in the history of the Pacific Coast that the packers have agreed to stabilize hog prices in .the Interest of the farmer and to co . operate toward stimulating production in the face of a threatened shortage on the coast. The text of the agreement follows: , "The food administration deems it lm ' perative that steps be taken to increase hog production on the Pacific Coast. In order that producers may have con fidence that hogs bred this spring may be marketed at a fair price, the admin istration hereby adopts the following minimum policy for the period during w htch similar minlmums are in force in the Middle West; the average price of . packing hQg bought by packers at the ; terminal points of San Francisco, Los "Angeles, Portland, Oakland, San Diego, Seattle, South San Francisco. Spokane and Sacramento will not be less than one cent under the food administration i minimum effective on the Chicago market, (such Chicago minimum now being 115.50 per hundred). Any packer may make it a condition for the main tenance of the minimum that he shall charge any loss of condemnation by fed eral or municipal inspection, to the raisei or shipper." Increase la Production Necessary . : Mr. Merrit Bald : "An Increase on pork production is . absolutely necessary to out the coast ' on an Independent basis from the middle ' west market, and also to make the coast X states a shipping point for pork products f vitally needed by the allies. The mini mum price means that producers are ; guaranteed against loss through a fluctuating market and insured a fair ' market for the expense, time and labor " involved." ' " Not more than 50 per cent as many ;" aows has been bred for spring farrows as last year, Cunningham declared. This condition he t said is due to the high price of feed and labor, unstablllzed prices and a generally unsatisfactory market condition. Price Low, Say, Farmers Seattle, Jan. 21. (I. N. S.) Pork pack ers and farmers of the Northwest to day are at a loss to account for the minimum price fixed for hogs on the Pacific coast at a meeting of packers . and food administration representatives In San Francisco yesterday. Seattle packers declare local prices usually are higher than those, in Chicago and yet the price fixed by the conference is one cent lower than Chicago quota tions. Packers declare If the vogern ment Is to make hog raising attractive to farmers, a greater difference must be paid. German Government j Asks About Luxberg i i Buenos Aires, Jan. 21. (I. N. S.) ' The German government, through the ) Argentine minister in Berlin, has made . representations to Argentina with re gard to the detention of Connt von . . Luxburg, the dismissed German charge, " on the Island of Martin Garcia. Simul taneously with these representations the Argentine government, : it was learned Sunday night, rejected a sug gestion of the Berlin government . to accredit Count Donoff, now acting sec? . retary of the German legation here, as envoy plenipotentiary to the Argentine government. Argentina's rejection of a successor - to Count von Luxburg, as reported in ; the above dispatch, may mean the first ' ' atep toward an open' break with Ger- vmany. Sf Large Candymaker Solves Fuel Problem New York. Jan. 21. -(I., X S.) A large candy manufacturer announces that he has solved the fuel shortage by sifting his ashes. On every ton of . reclaimed cinders he pours one gallon of . kerosene and in this way obtains a ton of efficient fuel. . The sifting , process costs him only si a ton and the kerosene 11 cents a gallon, wholesale. , lnr other words, he is getting good fuel at the rate of il.ll a ton. The plan . has been so satisfactory that he : intends' to ; make It permanent? even : after ' the coal shortage has ended. i! conomy is the keynote to I I U .VP .
