CENTENARY CHORCH TO EPVOR ' ' .,1, The twenty-seventh annual conven tion of tbe Portland district Epworth League will be held on May 18, 19 ami 20 In the Centenary Methodist church. East Ninth and Pine atreets. J. R Benton, president of the district, will be In chargre of the convention and itJ arrangements. Along with the differ ent committees, he is planning an in structive and helpful convention. Ev ery chapter in the district has- been asked to announce these dates and plans to attend as much as possible. All chapters are expected also to elect their delegates at once. The big rally of the convention will be held on the opening evening, Fri day. At this time Bishop Matthew Simpson Hughes is to speak. The din trict superintendent. Dr. William Wal lace Youngson, has offered a loving cup to the chapter having the largest attendance at the bishop's lecture. The program is being arranged and an nouncement of the list of speakers will be made soon. The program committee consi&ts of P. J. Schnell, chairman; Miss Minnie Marcy, Miss Ida Matson, C. D. Chil on, Miss Leva, Jackson and Dr. W. W. Youngson, advisory. Pastor Announces Series of Lectures A scries of- lectures by Rev. H. F. Given, pastor of the First United Pres byterian, church. East Thirty-seventh ttreet and Hawthorne avenue, began April 15 with his first subject for that evening, "The Rise of the Turkish Em Dire. Mohammed, the Saracens, the Turks." His topics for the ensuing weeks will be as follows: April 22 "Decline and End of the Turkish Empire." April 23 "The Meaning of Armaged don." May 6 "Has the 'Present War. a Place in Prophecy?" May 13 -The Effect on Christian ity of the Overthrow of the TurklBh Empire and the Possession of Bible Lands by Christian Powers." Top ics Announced By Rev. The sermon will 'deal with the spiritual and moral as sets that will accrue in spite of the horrible tragedies enacted. Special music will be furnished by the young people. The annual meeting of the Portland association of Congregational churches and ministers will be held at the At kinson Memorial church. INDIANS TO BE CONVENTION FEATURE To promulgate the functions of the Sunday school, elaborate twin con ventions of the Oregon State Sunday School association will be held in New berg, Or., on the three days beginning May 18, and in Pendleton on the three days beginning May 18. Marion Lawrence of Chicago, inter national general secretary, who is noted as an able and convincing expo nent of his work, wlll.be the principal speaker. The conventions have been designed with tireless forethought, and as a re sult a number of exceptional features will be on the programs. Indians from Umatilla and Alaska will be heard in what are anticipated to be unique addresses. World Organization Will Be Discussed By Peace Advocate Hamilton Holt, editor of the "Independent," will speak Sun- day evening at the Church of Our Father open forum. Broad- wr.y at Yamhill. His subject will bo "World Organization After the War." Mr. Holt visits Portland in the interests of the League to Kn force Peace, of which he is vice president. He is ne of the originators of the movement in this country. Rev. William G. Eliot Jr., will pre- side and following the address there will be opportunity for free questions and discussion. Services Held at Farm. The Christian Endeavor society of the First Congregational church visit ed Multnomah farm on Sunday after noon, and conducted devotional serv ices. FLAG RAISING TO BE FEATURED SUNDAY; Exercises Will Be Conducted at the Mt, Tabor Presby terian Church in Forenoon William S. Gilbert. A flag raising will be enacted Sun day at 10:30 a. m. at the Mt. Tabor Presbyterian church. The large flag made by the ladles will be formally raised to the tower of the church un der direction of General Flnzer and Colonel C. B. Dentler. An elaborate Program has been arranged. Colonel John L. May of the Third. Oregon and Major Gilbert, chaplain of the Third Oregon, will speak. At 11 a, m.a special patriotic ser mon, "America. Christianity and the World War," will be made by the pas tor. At the Evening; sermon, "The Three Good Cheers of Jesus," will be discussed. Piedmont Church Will Raise Flag An elaborate flag-raising ceremony will be enacted at the Piedmont Pres byterian church Sunday evening at o'clock. Weather permitting, the en tire program will be given in the open air in front of the church. The large flag will be unfurled from the northwest tower of the church. Justice Wallace McCamant will deliver an address, and Lieutenant-Adjutant-General Hotchkiss of th Third Oregon will deliver a tribute to the Stars and Stripes. Mrs. Leah Hathaway, the Veterans' quartet and a large chorus choir will also render patriotic selections. This will take the place of the regular evening serv ice. Annual Meeting of Congregation Held The annual meeting of the congre gation of the Central Presbyterian church, was held Thursday night. The reports of Rev. Dr. Arthur F. Blahop's pastorate showed that 669 communi cants were on the rolls. A meslcal program was given, fol lowing 'which the election of officers was held, resulting as follows: Charles Cleland, president: Profes sor D. T. Van Tine, clerk, both reelect ed; H. L.. Camp and George Pratt were reelected trustees. Eight deacons were elected as follows: C. W. Whittlesey, George Thomson, J. G. eBnnett, Dr. E. A. Myers. J. K .Werlein. Walter K. Gray, H. G. Let tow and C. E. Branln. The six elders elected for a three year term were: E. M. Tucker, R. D. Hewitt, Thomas Muir. W. D. Deaver, D. T. Van Tine and D. M. Davles. A social visitation week is to be started the first Sunday in May. Dr. Arthur Bishop Will Occupy Pulpit Dr. Arthur F, BUbop. pastor, will speak Sunday at 10:30 upon the topic, "All Things Work Together for the Good of God's People." At 7:45 he will speak upon "Neglecting tbe Great Salvation." The following Sunday eve ning his topic will be "Th Relation of the World s War to the Kingdom tof God." The occasion will be th dedication of two flags that have recently been purchased by th congregation for the church. One of these is to hang from the walls Tf the interior of the church, the other -to be displayed from the church tower on th outside of the building. There will be special music of pa triotic Aentlment by the large chorus and by special singers. The principal ' address will be by M. A. Miller, col lector of internal revenue. The flags will be presented by a member of the official board and accepted by the paa tor on behalf of the church. Members of the G. A. R. and allied organisations have been especially invited. In view of all the conditions now existing it is expected tnat this will be a service of very unusual Interest. Theae are being prepared now and will be available early next week. " Dr. Dyott'a Topic Designed to Help "Where to Find Life's Meaning" will be Dr. Luther R. Dyott's theme In ths First Congregational church on Sun day morning. This will be a practical sermon which Is designed to help men and women In every-day life and is i meant to throw light on some of life's hard problems. At 7:4 5 p. m. Children's Sermon Series to Be Given On Sunday the pastor of Kenllworth Presbyterian church will begin a riea of five minute children's sermons to be given at the opening service every Sunday morning after which the chil dren will be dismissed.
