March 20. -Thousands of acres of wheat land in Umatilla county are now being feseeded. or will be ia the next few weeks, because of the Injury done by the cold nd winds of the long winter. There Is not a wheat community in the county tbst hss es caped- damage, and hardly a fanner but will have some of his land to reseed. With wheat worth better than $1.50 a bushel, the expense pf reseeding will mean a big loss to farmers. There will be the additional loss of lesser yields, for spring sown grain rarely makes within 10 bushels of the acre yield of fall sown grain. Umatilla county farm lands have suffered sll winter from the Isek of a snow blanket. Though all other parts of eastern Oregon, east ot this county, have been under anow aince No vember, the snows tbst have fallen locally have been of abort duration. This left the sprouting wheat unprotected during periods of cold snails snd cold winds. The cold winds tbst swept the county four days last week did the crowning damages Club Suffers Host. The club varieties of wbest seemed to bsve suffered more than any otber variety. The hybrids . lnvsrisbly sre reported as having weathered tba winter In good shape. Mavny farmera are still uncertain ss to wbebber they will have to reseed any of their fields. There has n.t yet been enough Warm weather to de termine definitely whether the grain will sprout. The surface is hard and baked, and this may be what la keeping soma of the grain from sprouting. One farmer reports that one field ot hla gram, which an Invest! ration showed to bo moulded, is now soroutina. The rain last night was the most beneficial rata ot the tea sua. While not heavy. It was warm and fell gently. It will do muck toward soaking up the hard ground, and may bring oat much wheat believed dead. On the heavy lands of the reservation con siderable reoeedina has already commenced Lowell Roc era is reseeding 800 acres, J. 0. Hales is reseedlbg -SOO and George Peringer Is reported starting to' reseed nearly 1000. The heaviest damage is reported ia the section northwest of Pendleton in the vidnltv of Helix. The cold winds of last week are sold to hsve literally uncovered whole fields of grain. From Athena, Adams, Weston and Milton, however, come reports ot extennife teseedtng. The west end of the county, where alfalfa ts the principal product, is slao reported to bare suffered severely. The wind storm last week. which lasted tour days, is said by old timers to nave been -the worst in the history of the Umatilla project. The sandy soil vrss blown badly, snd tiis tender alfalfa shoots were left bared to their roots. A great deal Of reseeding WW result, it is said. , Backward Spring Is Reducing Planting ' Rtdrefleld. Wash.. March 28. farmers are getting uneasy over so much rain, which baa fallen In tbla part ot the country for more tl an a week, and aio inclined to think that a backward spring will be the result. The lsst week, was one of cold, blustery weather. with a heavy precipitation, which has rn- tarded farming operations, very little wheal will be planted this spring, owinsr to the In element weather during the early ' planting season. ' Oonstderablo land has not -bean plowed. Which farmers expected to plant to wheat. Many acres' that were Intended for wheat Will be seeded, to oats, and for this leswin a heavy oats crop Is forecssted. All land, fit tor i potatoes wtu probably be ased this year. Included in this will be many acres of new land clesred the past winter. The potato acreage 11.1s year will be the largest in the blstury if the country around here. It i said by growers familsr with local conditions. Fruit men art quits talisfled with tbt cool weather that is prevailing, at it will keep the trees from budding, and therefore insures them against frosts.
