PORTLAND, OREGONf; SUNDAY MORNING. FEBRUARY 25, 1917. HOCKEY SEASON FOR 191647 DRAWS NEAR 1 ITS CLOSE ON COAST Local interest Centers irt Fri day's Final Contest Be-1 tween Portland and Seattle' 0 ATM AN IS UNDER INQUIRY I Xis' FeUnxe to Jo!a 328th ttlloii Belaff lBTrtifted by Aaeocla- Uoa Official -The ifll-17 eeon of the Pacific Coast Hockey association will draw to a close this week, tho schedule of james bring as follows: Spokane vs. Vancouver at Vancouver Tuesday and Friday nlffHts, and Portland vs. Seattle j at Portland Krtday night. Seattle has a pOs-tponed gam to play with Spo kane, but -unless it Is necessary to play this contest. It will be passed up. 'There is a great deal of interest in Friday's contest and the fans are pull ing for the Rosebuds, who have been playing In great form the last month, to take the Seattle team down the line ' In the final game of. the season. Port- I land has won two out' of the three . .... i..j nn il hnm Ira Tmru )ltJU W . M - , Seattle. ' . un or ma ouimanuniK imiuira the season was the wonderful playing of Dick lrvln, the former Winnipeg amateur, who broke into professional hockey in the same sensational man ner as did Mickey Mackay. the sterling fact that the' Portland team was in the cellar durinc a majority f the season. Irvln played wondwrful liockey and Is listed among the leadings goal scorers. -Clem Ixmehltn, ariothe ex-Winnfpeg player, filled the snoes oenne late iei Irvine very nicely and there are. fans who believe that If Eddie Oatraan had not Jumped the Pacific Coast league for the National Hockey association. Portland would have been in the running- for -the championship again. - Oat man's loss was a severe blow to Portland and the matter of his not joining the 228th Battalion la being investigated by the officials of both hockey leagues. President Frank Patrick refuaeao discuss the matter. Ed Savage, man ager of the Portland team, who is re cuperating from injuries received In. a street car-Jitney accident several weeks ago, threw a little light on the subject last week. " Savage stated that when he mailed out the contracts for this season, he made Oatman a very good offer, but the former Rosebud captain refused to accept It, stating that he intended to enlist. Savage raised his ante, but the day before he received Portland's sec-. ond offer, he wired Savage stating be had enlisted. However. It has leaked out, -Oatman did not enlist and was to receive a big salary for playing with the 228th Battalion team, which was supposed to be composed of players be longing to that body of soldiers. When the battalion departed for England, atman remained in Canada, hence the nvestlgatlons by the officials of the leagues. A - short time afterward Oatman rote a letter to Manager Savage In hlch he said he wished he had re vived the offer a day sooner. According to J. A. LJvlngstone of the lefuQct Toronto National Hockey asso. button team, there will be profession' u hockey In Toronto next fall on an International plan. He is planning a league with several American clues. Earned for ."Worlds Series. Vancouver, B. C, Feb. 24.
