At the conclusion of the meeting, J. P. Kest- lnr of Hoqulam. Wash., who acted aa chair man or the meeting, gave our tbe rouowing statement: "The demand for clear spruce for export during tbe paat year exceeded the output, aa estimated and planned for by the manofa. tux era during ibis. "An ample supply of spruce timber sultsblo for export requirements is accessible only at high tost of logging a much higher coat than ordinarily prevails in lorxinr and requiring much time to develop. Logging plana were being formulated for meeting tbe Increased demands for the current year, but fortunately very few of the manufacturers had cloed ne gotiations snd it la now tbe genersl opinion of the clear spruce Industry that it would be best to defer such negotistlons snd plans for si Increased spruce log supply, until such time as the spruce manufacturers have some assurance. that market and transportation con. di lions existing during 191& will not be dia- ttabed. "Manufacturers contend that prices asked for clear Sitka spruce aeroplane stock are not exorbitant after considering that such a large proportion of every log gua Into the lower grades of lumber, to be absorbed by tbe d .- nestle msrket with its limited requirements. As a result ot tbe heavy production of spruce lumber on tbis coast lu the paat two years, foMcred by the entente allies' aeroplane de mands, tho domestic markets for ths lower Ciades of spruce have been glutted, resulting la manufacturers carrying excessive stocks o low-valued lamber. "If the British embirrj applies to Sitka spruce, snd is maintained, it la the opinion 0 leading lumbermen that it will have seikma effect 00 general business conditions of the Pacific northwest. During a discussion of spruce grading raise, 1 is said tbe Sitka sprace manufacturer took serious exception to ths British classl flea tlon of "silver" spruce aa applying to their product.
