For the purpose of eliminating any antag

country and city creameries, ss well as set
standards of value, discuss problem for mu
tual cooperation and betterment, and if neces

call of s meeting of Oregon creamery men st
Salem next Wednesday.
The call was announced by H. J- Fanst of
the Alsea creamery of Portland, in a circular
letter, conies of which have been sent to every
creamery manager In the state. The move has
been Indorsed by J. D. Mlckle, state dairy and
food commissioner. The letter is as follows:
'.'Some time sgo It occurred to me that by
getting tbe creamery managers together and
collectively discussing tbe many problems that
confront us and make an effort to solve them,
much good can come to the outside or country
creamery.
"I bsve discussed the matter with Mr.
Mlckle. and he urged me to issue a call for
sr.ch a meeting. At the buttermakers' conven
tion the matter was discussed with many of the
creamery managers, and met with approval.
Professor R. R. Graves of the Oregon Agricul
tural college, xnd Mr. A. Slaughter, president
of the Buttermakers' association, were heartily
in favor of such a move, and we decided to
call a meeting at tbe Marlon hotel, Salem, Or.,
January 17. at 2 p. m.
"It is urgently requested that your manager
or representative be present, as you cannot af
ford to miss being represented, and no cream
ery can have business of more Importance than
thia meeting will be, and our success depends
upon the number tepresented.
"The object of the meeting will be to dls
cura all problems for the betterment of our
business, whether pertaining to markets, bat-
ttrfat prices, cream grading, legislation or
what not, and providing ways and means of
accomplishing whatever we decide to take no

Manufacturers of aeroplane stock, represent
ing 90 per cent of the output la Oregon and
Washington, met la Tacoma on Friday after
neon to discuss the embargo recently an
nounced by the British government for tbe
ccr-trol of spruce Importatlooa into the United
Kli:gdom.
The sltaatloa wss viewed with considers hie
alcrm. After comparing Information from
fenr different sources it was the sense ot
the meeting that the embargo order, while
sieciflcally mentioning silver rpruce. sn in
ferior species of spruce, la aimed at the Pa
cific coast's famous Sitka spruce, said to te
the only wood la the world that meets all the
requirements of lightness In weight snd great
strength necessary to aero;. lane construction.
At the conclusion of the meeting, J. P. Kest-
lnr of Hoqulam. Wash., who acted aa chair
man or the meeting, gave our tbe rouowing
statement:
"The demand for clear spruce for export
during tbe paat year exceeded the output, aa
estimated and planned for by the manofa.
tux era during ibis.
"An ample supply of spruce timber sultsblo
for export requirements is accessible only at
high tost of logging a much higher coat than
ordinarily prevails in lorxinr and requiring
much time to develop. Logging plana were
being formulated for meeting tbe Increased
demands for the current year, but fortunately
very few of the manufacturers had cloed ne
gotiations snd it la now tbe genersl opinion
of the clear spruce Industry that it would be
best to defer such negotistlons snd plans for
si Increased spruce log supply, until such
time as the spruce manufacturers have some
assurance. that market and transportation con.
di lions existing during 191& will not be dia-
ttabed.
"Manufacturers contend that prices asked
for clear Sitka spruce aeroplane stock are not
exorbitant after considering that such a large
proportion of every log gua Into the lower
grades of lumber, to be absorbed by tbe d .-
nestle msrket with its limited requirements.
As a result ot tbe heavy production of spruce
lumber on tbis coast lu the paat two years,
foMcred by the entente allies' aeroplane de
mands, tho domestic markets for ths lower
Ciades of spruce have been glutted, resulting
la manufacturers carrying excessive stocks o
low-valued lamber.
"If the British embirrj applies to Sitka
spruce, snd is maintained, it la the opinion
0 leading lumbermen that it will have
seikma effect 00 general business conditions
of the Pacific northwest.
During a discussion of spruce grading raise,
1 is said tbe Sitka sprace manufacturer
took serious exception to ths British classl
flea tlon of "silver" spruce aa applying to their
product.
