Anticipating a larva Increase In the activities and commercial Importance of the Industry In the northwest with in the next faw years, tha Portland Union Stockyards company la rapidly enlarging facilities to meet the situ ation. Construction amounting to over 1110,000 Is now in progress at tho Portland Union stockyards In north Portland. Work on tha first unit of the Live stoclc Exchange building, which Is to b completed before tha first of the yea. Is progressing smoothly and the ioundatlon work Is nearly completed. This unit of tha building will cost over $100,000 and will be the home of tha company's administrative offices and allied intercuts. The first of the three floors will be used for tlie ad ministrative offices of the company, while the second floor will be de voted to other allied offices. Work is also progressing on the new scale house, which H. I,. Mr-Gee, assistant secretary, snys will be equipped with the largest set of scales west of Denver. Wlgmore, for 13 years a professor in the Eugene Bible university and for nine years pastor of the Christian church at Pprlngfleld, died at his home In this city Sunday afternoon follow ing an operation for appendicitis. He was born. In Maudlan, England, near, London, and came to America (When nine years of age. He preached his last sermon on his fifty-second birthday last Sunday at Springfield. He was a graduate of Drake univer sity at Des Moines, Iowa, and held a master's degree in the University of Oregon. He came here from Mon mouth, Or., where he was pastor of the Christian churcli for a number Of years. He is survived by his widow and three children, Harold. La Grande and Frona, all at home. The funeral will be held at the First Christian church bi this city Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Government Urges Eat Extermination Bpedal Plea for Municipal Cleanliness X Made hy PudIIo Health Service In Bulletin Issued. Washington. Aug. 21. (I. N. S.) In a special plea for municipal cleanli ness the public health service has Is sued a bulletin urging the elimination of rats through the construction of rat proof buildings. The bullletin calls attention to the high death rate of the bubonic plague among humans. The plague. It ex plains, is primarily a disease of ro dents. It Is Identical with the black death of the middle ages. It is estimated that every case of human plague costs the municipality In which it occurs at least 17500. This Joes not take Into account the enor mous loss due to disastrous quaran tines and the commercial paralysis which the fear of the disease so fie fluently produces. Eugene, Or., Aug. 21. Seventy-six business men of Ran Francisco ar rived in Eugene at 8:20 o'clock las; night in a special train on their way to Coos Bay on one of their trade excursions. They were met at the station here by several hundred citi zens and escorted to the Chamber of Commerce, where an informal recep tion was tendered them. Mayor W. A. Bell and Joseph Koke, president of the Eugene Chamber of Commerce, made short speeches of welcome. Other Eugene speakers were r.. J. Adams and Judge 11. W. Thomp son. This forenoon the visitors called upon the business men of Eugene and were shown about the city in motor cars. They expect to leav, on their special train for Coos Bay at 2:30 p. m. Darrnw, pnmoloificfll and horticultural investigator of the United States de partment of agriculture, Washington. D. C, spent Snturdtiy In this city and vicinity looking over the loganberry industry. After a thorough Investiga tion Mr. Darrow 1a of the opinion that California and Washington soil anil climate are not nearly so favor able to the production of loganberries as is the Willamette valley district of Oregon. Mr. Darrow came to Albany at the request of George G. Ilrown of the local loganberry juice plant and car ried on in vestigations htie that he lias been pursuing all through west ern Washington, Oregon and Califor nia, He has bad in' view deteamlnlng the possible area and the most favor able conditions for the loganberry in dustry, and he is already convinced that the soil and olimatlo conditions of this section excel any other part of the country. Mr. Darrow's visit Is in the Interest of the grower. Ills Investigations carried him into a consideration of pests that might work on the fruit Crop, the conditions and manner, of treatment to assist the grower to de termine the most desirable soils, and how to prepare the land and plant yards ajid train and cultivate the loganberry plant so as to produce the highest quality of berry and give the largest possible yield to the grower. Small Cyclone) Visit. Albany, Or.. Aug. II. A very un usual experience for Oregon was wit nessed Thursday new Oak Creek, southeast of this city, when a small cyclone struck tho Babcock place, Elmer Miller and Clifford Walker were making some repairs on a clover bul ler when they observed a rnlnature cy clone approaching from the north. The center of the whirl passed, between the engine and the huller and maiie things rattle for a ehort time. The whirl cleaned out a strip of clover through the field 60 feet wide and piled It up to the top of a nearby fence, packing j It tightly Tetits Lived in AJbtuiy. Albany, Or., Aug. 21. Mr. and Mrs. Itoy Petit, who came into notoriety Thursday when Mra. Petit shot and killed her husband at Mount Clemens, Mich., lived In Albany about 18 months ago when Petit was employed as bus driver and hotel runner and his pretty wife was a waitress in the St. Francis hotel. They went to I'ortUinU from here. Mr Hoggs Asks Divorce. Albany, Or., Aug. 31. Charging that her husband once hit her on the head with an Iron poker knocking her uncon scious, that he knocked her off of a porch and that he often beat her and cursed her, Mrs. Alice Boggs of Har rlsburg, yesterday began suit for di vorce from Walter K. Boggs. Plaintiff states that she was compelled to earn part of the living. She asks for cus tody of their two children, aged 3 and j 6, and her share of Harrisburg property ; which is valued at J 1500. ! General Sam Hughes Sees Allies' Victory Canadian War Minister He tarns to Paris Prom Tour of Front Confident of Defeat of Central Powers. Paris, Aug. 21. (I. N. B.) Sir Gen eral Sam Hughes, the Canadian war minister, arrived in Paris Sunday from a week's inspection of the British front of the" Somme. He stated to the cor respondent of the International News Service: "No easy task, nor a spectacular rush forward must be expected, but the unrelenting pressure of the allies' armies is bound to break the enemies resistance. "I cannot prophesy the exact date of the end of the war, but it Is cer tain that it will end with a complete victory of the allied armies. Sellgman of New York, died here, yesterday. . He was 93 years of age, ; . GERMAN Die SINKS TWO LIGHT CRUISERS IN NORMA BRUSH British, in Turn, Claim to' Have Destroyed One Sub marine and Rammed One. Ixndon. Aug. 21. Two British light cruisers and a German submarine were sunk and another U boat rammed when the ' German and British high seas fleets came, within a few sea miles of a new clash in the North sea Satur day. The two cruisers, the Nottingham and Falmouth, were destroyed by sub marine attacks, according to an of ficial statement by the admiralty last night. The British naval forces were searching for the German high seas fleet, which, these statemeuts say, "came out, but on learning from their scouts that British forces were in considerable strength, avoided an en gagement and returned to port." Thirty-eight members of . the crew of the cruiser Nottingham are missing and are believed to have been drowned. All of her officers as well as the whole complement of the Falmouth were saved, though, one of her stok ers died of injuries. The German admiralty, In a brief statement issued last night. In which no reference is made to an ac tion in the North sea, announced tha destruction by a German submarine of a "small cruiser and destroyer," adding that another small cruiser and a battleship were damaged by tor pedoes. The Nottingham displaced 5100 tons and was built in 1913. Her length was 430 feet end beam 49 feet. The Falmouth, built in 1910, dis placed 6250 tons and had a complement of 376 officers and men. Her dimen tions were practically the same as those of the Nottingham. Schumann-Heink Is Welcomed at Dallas Famous contralto Sings in Courthouse Yard May Eny Farm of 600 Acres In Polk County. Dallas, Or., Aug. 21. Madame Sehn-mann-Heink may till the soil In Polk county if her visit to the Nickum ranch today is productive of a sale. The famous contralto, who is In Oregon to buy a farm, Saturday looked over the property best known as the E. B. V. Paul place. It Is & highly Improved piece of ground cov ering 500 acres and for a long time was planted to hops but of late, since its sale to the Nlckums of Portland, has been given over to the production of fruits. She made no intimation, however- whether or not she would Invest in this property. It s located near Buell In Polk county. In the afternoon a committee, repre senting the Commercial club, and Mayor Kirkpntrirk of Dallas, drove over to the Nickum ranch with an In vitation for the famous opera star to visit this place. She responded and between 100 and 200 little tots gathered in tha courJthouse yard to greet l-.er on her arrival. She shook hands with all and then, mounting t,ie bandstand, sang "Swanee River.' Kach of her little hearers presented her with a bunch of sweet peas that gave her auto the appearance of a huge flower vase. She then returned to the Nickum ranch and tomorrow morning will leave for Portland. . He told friends he was not sick. "I only feel tired.'' he said. Mr. Carnegle'a doctor, who accompanied him con stantly and is always within call, de clined to talk about his patient.
