PROPOSED MERGER OF COLLEGE DISCUSSED Synod Finally Refers Ques ' tion to Committee of 5 Ministers and 4 Elders, University of Oregon, Eugene, Or., July 21. After ordering the repre sentatives of the Coagregational church from the hall, the Presbyterian ay nod of Oregon spent Thursday's ses sion behind closed doors fighting out the proposed merger of Albany college and Pacific university The matter was finally referred to a committee of five ministers and four elders which may report to the pres ent session. Albany college will open as usual in the fall according to Rev. Carl H. Elliot of Salem, chairman of the col lege committee. 'The synod voted to ask the national committee on aid for colleges to con tribute 12100 towards paying some of the back salaries," said Mr. Elliot. "This will not cover the deficit. How to meet the balance was not decided on." Before the synod went into secret session. Dr. Luther R. Dyott' pastor of the First Congregational church of Portland, and a trustee of Pacific uni versity, urged that all of the Willam- tte valley denominational colleges combine in one institution at Eugene. The suggestion met with applause and the merger committee was given power to consider the feasibility of such a move. Dr. W. H. Bleakney of Walla Walla nd Dr. Edward M. Sharp of Albany were, elected trustees oi the ban Francisco theological seminary. Yesterday's registration showed 103 ministers and 16 elders in attendance as compared with 82 ministers and 17 elders last year. Meaning With Cards There is dispute among the solo players over the right to play a solo BEHIND CLOSED DOORS and alL sorts or bets nave been placed as to whether this one or that one is right or wrong. Hoyle doesn't specifi cally cover the rule and custom has been Invoked by each side. So far it' hasn't been necessary to call in the "harness bulls," but if the discussion waxes any warmer the supreme court may be appealed to. A perusal of the well known sport authority, the Con gressional Record, doesn't show the mooted point covered. Mere's the palpitating subject that has been trying men's souls and pocketbooks. "Reed is dealing. Evans, who is first in say, says 'I solo.' Linn, play ing the second hand, says, 'I heart so'o.' Evans says. 'Mine is a heart,' and claims the right to play the hand against the other two!" Now that you have it before you, start to "figgerin." "Rosy" Rosen thal, high tyee of the solo business at the Press club, says Evans is en titled to play the heart solo according to custom extending back years and years, and if left to him, la willing to bet on his decision. Dow V. Walker of the Multnomah club asserts that, ac cording to the Multnomah club mode Linn is entitled to the solo, as the sec ond bidder had a right to believe that the first did not have a heart solo In his hand. Inasmuch as "Rosy" weighs 122 ring side and Do can make no better than 274 at S o'clock, it a hardly likely that these two can be gotten Into the same ring on boxing day. Come on, boys! Don't shoot till you see the whites of their eyes! Improvements at Oswego Lake. Announcement is made of the fixing of the dam at Oswego Lake, thereby raising the water in the lake several feet.
