A petition has been presented to the Lane county court to make the proposed bridge across the North Fork of the Slualaw river, between Cuihman, the present terminus of the Willamette Pacific railway, and Florence, a combination wagon and railroad bridge, with a view to the construction of a spur of the Willamette Pacific from Cushman to Florence, a distance of four miles. The petition was presented by H. P. Dut ton. superintendent of the Tidewater Mill company, which operates a saw mill at Florence. This company is tacked by Porter Brothers, railroad contractors. C Jeffers, who lives in Cow Creek valley, was burned Monday night while Mr. Jeffers was In Salem visiting bis wife, who Is a patient In a hospital there. He believes the fire, was of Incendiary origin and has asked Sher iff Qulne to conduct an investigation. Mr. Jeffers was one of the important witnesses for the state in the case of Roy Farnam of Cow Creek who is now serving a term in the Oregon peniten tiary. Mrs. C. Stating' 'that they were deprived of meant of livelihood when the lot teries were put out of business in San Francisco, three widows who had been selling lottery tickets on commission, appealed to the state board of con trol today for aid. They said they had been able, from their commissions, to support their children. The control board will Investigate, one of the members saying that It would be much better to furnish wid ows pensions than to countenance lotteries.
